Can we have a list of indie games that were very good, and failed to sell?

Did any of you create games that took years to make and failed to sell well?

6a2e4f No.18284

I have a suspicion very few good indie games fail.

31afde No.18291

>>18284

I kinda have it too, since no one can even come up with 10 games.

I mean, it's subjective of course what good games are, but we have at least some sort of common opinions if it's at least a good game or a hipster game.

a7e989 No.18297

>>18291

If many people know that a game is good, it will most likely sell well. I guess there are tons of decent games sitting on google play and foreign online retailers unsold.

884743 No.18302

>>18297

I was talking about PC/console games, no serious game enthusiast gives a shit about anything on google play, no matter how good.

Snakebird

48e578 No.18350

>>18346

Can't tell if you are serious or but, I watched 30 seconds of Snakebird and I can instantly tell it's a bad game.

It's another puzzle game , why would I play that when I could instead play some long adventure game with good music and story?

And it got about 120 reviews. Let's assume that 10% of steam users make reviews, then the game got bought about 1200 times. This shitty puzzle game would make about 10k USD, 3k would go to steam.

For a non innovative, boring, flash tier graphics, and simple game 7k usd is not bad. It's not like the dude who made it took years to develop this.

I want good indie games that failed.

120757 No.18355

>>18350

It's a damn good puzzle game. Your faggot brain wouldn't be able to handle the first 5 levels.

48e578 No.18376

>>18355

Puzzle games cannot compare to other genres.

585101 No.18385

>>18350

>And it got about 120 reviews. Let's assume that 10% of steam users make reviews

I don't know how they calculate their numbers, but SteamSpy is supposed to be decently accurate

http://steamspy.com/app/357300

e5f0cc No.18392

>>18385

So if steamspy is correct that simple puzzle got about 40k in dollars, and they were left with 28k after steam money.

Actually I am a bit upset that yet another puzzle game got 28k and people still think it's not enough, it's too much, that shit doesn't even take a year to make.

89ef93 No.18789

What about Terraria and Hearthstone? Sure, they're clones of desktop games, but I'd argue Hearthstone is better on android because of the type of game it is. Terraria maybe not so much.

8f805a No.18790

>>18789

Terraria was first a PC game, probably hearthstone too (didn't play it). They were designed for PC and ported later.

e82515 No.20795

Wouldn't it be more interesting to have a list of bad indie games and analyse why they failed?

e394bb No.20808

>>18392

>too much

Nigga what?

Where the people wrong when they gave him money?

Was he wrong when he accepted it?

How can you possibly say that it's wrong for his game to sell well?

439468 No.20817

>>20795

knowing what not to do is important, but knowing what to do is even better

c63c0b No.20819

File: 1439299422427.jpg (186.87 KB, 1300x700, 13:7, dustforce-header.jpg)

>>20795

I think analyzing why good games failed despite being good is even more interesting.

Pic related is one of the best indie games IMO, but it barely made enough money to fund their next game.

The reason Dustforce didn't do so well is pretty obvious though; it has too high skill ceiling. It's incredibly difficult to complete some of the later levels at all even if you're a decent player. And being unable to complete the game is very disappointing.

I also have a problem with my keyboard, I had a huge amount of difficulty completing the tutorial level, because my keyboard cannot do a dash jump properly. You need to hold right, dash, and then jump. But my keyboard cannot press all those keys at the same time, which requires me to let go of the dash key before I can jump, and that's very difficult to do quickly, and that's no good because the game requires very precise timing and quick actions. Funnily enough I can do it just fine when moving left, but that isn't much help since most levels progress to the right.

73efb9 No.20821

>>20819

Also, I don't think the hub world lends itself to a very engaging game.

If you drop the player to a room and tell them to choose whatever level, it's much less exciting than going through one level to another. It leads you to give up and go somewhere else, and then get stuck into this state where all the levels are incomplete and you don't know what to do, instead of trying to master the current level in order to progress.

The very high difficulty makes Dustforce sort of require a free level selection though, because otherwise you would get stuck very quickly.

80c677 No.20826

>>20817

But then you'd end up with FiFa 2019, aka, clones, variations and remakes of the same shitty games again and again.

>>20819

>not getting keyboard input right in 2015

>good game

4b44c2 No.20828

>>20808

the people can do whatever they want with their money, that doesn't change the fact that the game isn't worth playing at all or paying for when there are 100000 better games out there

4878a5 No.20829

>>20826

That's not a limitation of the game, it's a limitation of anon's keyboard. A lot of keyboards, actually. You could argue that you should design your game around the worst keyboards' limitations, but that would limit the possible amount of designs by a LOT. There are some very shitty keyboards out there.

Besides, they probably urge you to use a controller anyway, like Super Meat Boy did. Not sure, don't own the game.

>>18376

>>20828

Ow, the edge. Do you two wear fedoras?

Also OP, this thread is somewhat stupid, since any good game that people know is going to do well at some point under normal circumstances. The ones that fail do so because no one knows them, so we can't list them.

e394bb No.20832

>>20828

You never claimed either of those two things, stop moving the goalposts.

You claimed that (of 40k) >it's too much

Implying that there is a right amount, and 40k, not being the right amount, is thus wrong.

Since nature itself cannot be wrong, clearly the wrong was introduced by the actions of man.

What actions where taken by people that were wrong?

Was it people giving him their money, was it him accepting, was it another action that was wrong?

373073 No.20834

>>20819

I just don't like the theme

you go around and clean stuff

I don't care

a game in which you play some garbage themed villain and make everyone drown in piles and piles of junk would be far more interesting

especially if you get to kill captain planet and al gore

>Ow, the edge. Do you two wear fedoras?

The asshurt you have right now is so much that the only explanation is that you are the dev of that game. No normal person would get mad at someone who says puzzle games are inferior to most genres.

Not that only, no one sane would get mad when a person says that some random puzzle game isn't so great, fucking deal with it, it doesn't deserve more than a few thousand dollars at best.

>but muh snakebird, it can never get enough money, the fedoras, MUH SNAKE BIRD, you e-edge lord!

Yes 40k is too much, because it only takes a few months to make that game. That's why. It doesn't take even a year to make a game like snakebird, you can watch a puzzle game tutorial and just make the graphics yourself and there you have it, yet another puzzle game.

People aren't wrong that they are buying snake bird, but I do have a right to also laugh at them for spending money on that game when there are so many others that are better. Don't waste time replying because you are some butthurt devs.

Dev, get out. If you don't like my opinion then too bad. Snake bird is boring and I'll continue saying it, no matter what some mad faggots say.

There are better free android games. I'd rather sit on the toilet for 10 minutes and play pixel dungeon than 'snake bird'

4878a5 No.20855

>>20852

"X is bad and doesn't deserve money" is something very different from "I don't like X", and is exceptionally edgy since only a retarded 12 year old would say it.

Besides, if it's so easy to shit out a puzzle game that gets you 40k, why don't you do it yourself?

598471 No.20866

a9fa45 No.20867

>Besides, if it's so easy to shit out a puzzle game that gets you 40k, why don't you do it yourself?

because it's all luck, why don't you create the next flappy bird you faggot? it is easy but it's luck that will help, you won't shut me up, if I have the opinion that snake bird doesn't deserve a lot of money then too bad for you, you are so damn obvious that you worked on that game

a9fa45 No.20868

>>20866

That's a pretty interesting link. The game doesn't look that terrible, but it just looks bland. I'm sure most of their problems would be solved by just having more play testing. Basically they should had spend way more time designing and playing their creation and not release it unless it's great.

4878a5 No.20877

>>20867

I've never even played the game, I haven't said a single word defending it. All I've said is it's retarded for saying puzzle games as a whole are bad, and makes you sound like an edgy teen.

>>20866

>We are very pleased to announce that we were granted a loan that will allow us to complete the development of the basic game. So no matter what, Woolfe will get released!

>The team is now dismantled and we have requested bankruptcy unable to pay outstanding bills.

Schafer-tier mismanagement probably, don't blame gamers for it. Besides, they make it pretty clear no one liked the game once they showed what they had made. Ergo, not a good game.

aee31a No.20878

>>20819

have you considered rebinding some of your keys?

59be25 No.20880

>>20877

How long are you gonna stretch this conversation? Puzzle are inferior to other genres, this is what I said. And that snake bird is yet another puzzle game that can be considered successful for about the 40k dollars it had, and people shouldn't call it a failure because puzzle games don't deserve millions of dollars. They just don't.

I'm out of this conversation, and I don't care if you think every game or genre is equal.

f8c5b2 No.21202

There probably are some, but I've never heard of them, since they failed.

GAMES

NEED

TO

BE

PLAYED

They got lost in the world they were creating and ignored the fundamentals.
