Oh and yeah, that engine isn't public yet. I'll still be working on it some as I work on LEWD. I'm not really trying to pimp my engine out right now, it's just relevant to the sort of stuff to expect from LEWD.

Also, since it can be confusing, the engine is really different from other things. Most people think engine = thing that make graphic good.

These tools and such are all for creating a server that simulates a world and is delivering/streaming content to the client whether that's text, html, json, models, etc. The client doesn't matter, though I like web ones.

Like in the future after LEWD I wanted to make an adult 3D MMORPG, and to be able to have content streamed similar to how Guild Wars did it, but better in that entire game behavior can change instead of just the map without taking the server down, recompiling, etc.

Having some actual impactful choices instead of mashing "next" every second or two just to get the next sentence, phrase, or "................" that comes up 5 times in a row.

I imagine VNs work better in actual Japanese with its more condensed alphabet that might have more on a line. Light novels tend to be good, after all. I just don't think they translate well directly to English. I think text adventures work better in English.

Western erotic writing tend to be more hilarious and to the point. JP erotic writing on the other hand has always felt the same, as if the writers were trying to artificially inflate wordcount.

I think something in-between would be best. I dislike both excessively long text blocks as well as having to make a menu choice for every paragraph as western IF writers tend to do.

Something similar to light novel style but with more pictures would be nice. Notice the trend of having text hardprinted onto erotic event CGs now to give context. Something like that but with the ability for added graphical effects (such as pan/zoom and minor animations in graphic novel style) would be perfect.

Well, people said some similar things in the beginning with LEWD.

Some of the left over content from that is Kayleigh. Yep. Huge block of text for her sex scene. It'll be reworked.

But since then, I've tried to have some balance between when things should be quick and snappy, and even when there could be large walls of text to try to break them up with player choices instead of the PC just being "along for the ride". Maybe I'm not fully succeeding, but I've taken not of it and I'm trying.

Also, for some unknown reason, most IF games just delete the previous text so you can't go back and what read what happened before the current thing. I think leaving the previous stuff alleviates some of what you said. Did you play it?

I do thing a game that's more light novel style, maybe a picture for each paragraph, changing/animating as you scroll through, could be really nice. Not for LEWD, though, but just as a response to your last line.

Western text adventures are infested with shit writers, trust fund kiddies, bizarre fetishists and/or furfags, and tumblrcunts with agendas to hamfistedly push. It's pretty much an excuse for fanfic-tier writefags to call themselves "game developers" and get that Kotaku coverage/furfag dosh.

Western visual novels aren't that much better but the skill/$ barrier to entry of the visuals keeps at least some of the cancer out.

I'll agree that ero scenes never translate well into English, but the point of (non-nukige) Japanese VNs is not really to be fap material, but to tell a story, engross you in the setting through the self-insert MC, and make you fall in love with the characters. The porn is just icing on the cake, and in fact many of the most popular VNs are either non-ero or sold best in versions that didn't include it.

Of course there are countless examples of poorly written garbage amongst Japanese VNs, but as a whole they do a much better job of providing interesting settings, stories, art styles, and waifus, having been perfecting the craft for decades before hipster retards played Ace Attorney and spontaneously decided that VNs and dating sims didn't have to be "problematic" or "gross."

I know what you mean, but it's trying too hard to be cool and just comes out awkward. Is English your first language? Either way, you need to have an editor. Considering, especially, that this is based on writing, you'll need to make sure the engine itself is free of errors or else people will ... heh... write you off quickly.

How about using words instead of sprites then? Having empty tiles is kinda weird. Those numbers make it even weirder - I suppose they represent how many entities are on that tile or something?

If a distant tile says "Small figurine", at least I know why am I going all the way to that tile, having multiple potentially unwanted encounters on the way.

Well the problem, in LEWD at least and not an engine problem itself, is just how to handle moving NPCs.

If someone has a scene going with an NPC, and it's not finished and excited, but another player does something that triggers the NPC to walk away and leave the area, that makes a massive continuity error.

Writing in scenarios for what's happened to them differently for whoever and imagining it works a lot better.

Well no. That's not how it will work with not having visible NPCs, because you can fudge things around with different descriptions for different people.

But that is a large part of why I don't have sprites for them, because I'd lose that.

MUDs typically do not have them for the same reason and they seem to work fine.

I do not like how MMORPGs are almost always just a single player story but filled with lots of other players. They tell you you're the hero or some shit and have to defeat the big bad protag, making a crazy disconnect when you can clearly see that hundreds of thousands of people have already defeated it. It makes no sense.

I played a few minutes of SS13 but that's about it for Byond stuff. The lag and the engine itself makes playing those games usually pretty unbearable for me.

I looked at a video. Yeah similar to SS13.

I was really hoping some people could get a team together to make a better successor to SS13 on my engine. Could handle hundreds or thousands of players, maybe have procedurally generated other worlds and such. It's not something I actually want to make myself, though.

I like solving the big problems with programming. I don't like the busy working of making a ton of different items and interactions.
