Progress general makes me really want to work on something.

Any specific recommendations for 2D engines or languages on linux? I'd like to be able to develop while using linux, not just port executables to it.

I do my games in the Love2d framework. It's built in C and uses Lua for its API. Runs fine on Linux, and is in my opinion the best 2D framework available.

I'll take a look, thanks!

Godot runs on Linux and is free like Murka and beer.

Have also heard good things about Love. However, is it more a lib, or a full dev suite?

Love2D is pretty good. It stays out of your way, but it still gives you enough to make it relatively easy to do things.

Is there anything that uses Ruby? I've been learning it for RPG Maker stuff and I really like it so far.

There are those however ruby is probably too slow for most games, even python would be a better choice.

OpenFL :^)

Another vote for Godot.

If you don't mind programming in Java, you could check out libgdx (https://libgdx.badlogicgames.com/). It includes a rendering engine (2D and 3D), physics simulation (Box2D for 2D), scene graph system, a particle editor, audio playback, and loads of other stuff. However, you are not bound to use any of these and can easily replace one or the other by your own solutions.

There is also an ambitious map/asset editor called Overlap2D (http://overlap2d.com/), but i don't know how functional it is at this point.

Libgdx is brilliant, You can, if you hate Java and love clojure you can use play-clj ( which is libgdx with a clojure wrapper. But in general libgdx is very nice to use.

Python is not significantly faster than ruby

bb6e82 No.21156

>>21155

No, but it is a little bit faster, but neither are great choices for games other than light scripting

LÖVE2D is more of a library like libGDX or PyGame. It doesn't come with an IDE, but it's still fairly easy and fool proof.

Another vote for libGDX. It's pretty fucking pleasant to work with it and the best thing about it is that you can use their own wrappers to make your life easier or access more "low level" functions and objects to do it yourself as you please.

Also, libGDX is compatible with every JVM language, so you can also go balls to the wall and use it with Scala, which is ideal if you dislike Java and being lost in stupid parenthesis.

Furthermore, you it is very easy to deploy for phones as the whole library is designed with touch devices in mind.
