Welcome to AGDG, have you ever made a game?

Where does /agdg/ get money to live from and to continue deving?

I just want to make games, but reality won't let me. My PC needs to be fixed, I need food, but I also need to work for more than 8 hours per day on my game. It's stressful as fuck.

What do you guys do to make money to continue working on your game?

d519fa No.20234

I have a day job as an IT guy. I often fall asleep in front of my computer in the evenings.

Progress is really slow but I'm in no rush since I'm waiting for the market correction to finally cull all the shitty indie devs (my competition) before I debut my game.

If you really need to earn money right away, start a Patreon and get making hentai.

Specifically furry hentai. You'll earn more than a dayjob in no time.

> I'm waiting for the market correction to finally cull all the shitty indie devs

I don't think there will ever be a moment when that will happen, it will rather be even more full of shit indie games instead in the future.

I would honestly draw furry if I was good at drawing.

Daily job as a software engineer. Honestly, daily job should be an obvious answer. It kind of removes the "for teh money" motivation of gamedev, leaving only "do something that is acclaimed" motivation, but also consumes too much time to fully commit. Also I've figured out that since I can't into art I should stop thinking about gamedev for a while so now I don't dev at all and stick around for programming discussions. By the time I'll learn how to draw I'll probably just switch to drawing porn like that one nodev did.

If you drew the attached image, I think your art skills are perfectly fine. It's a trap to always want your art to be better. Because as your skill grows, your ability to discern grows as well. So you start chasing a mythical level of quality. It's great if you want to be a great artist, but terrible if you want to make games.

In other words, if there was a cool game that had art of that level, I would be definitely interested.

I didn't draw the attached image. It's one of the that-HTML5-local-storage-exploit cats. I couldn't draw a cat to save my life.

Instead of gitting good at art, I was gitting good at programming, kind of. It scored me an ok job but I can't help myself but feel envious towards people who got good at art instead and get all the positive attention.

That's true. Good concept art can drive Kickstarters.

While good fully playable skeletal frameworks get cobwebs.

11cb73 No.20247

I have no life, I just work then go home and browse chans, play vidya, watch anime and develop my game. If you don't spend money in stuff like going out in the weekends and stuff you can manage to make enough to pay for your shitty game development.

5b6ee9 No.20258

My situation is a bit tougher than the lot of you. I'm still in school, >inb4 underage b& and I'm about to start what would be the equivalent of the last year of high school in Burgerland, in September. The following year after that is university time, and my parents are having a hard time saving up money. They just don't have enough, and they're asking me to go get a job. I haven't even bothered to try to get one, since I knew that I'd get fucked in the ass regarding wage and working hours. I live in an area in which tourism is king when it comes to the local economy, and people mostly work in summer. It's intense. Me and my parents know we need that money. So, I decided I would go mad as hell in developing my game, hoping that I would get something decent done and try to jew some money through donations or whatever. If that plan failed, I could commission models or something. I really wanted to develop my game out of passion, but I'll have to add desperation to the mix.

Everything is going to shit in September anyways, so there's that.

>So, I decided I would go mad as hell in developing my game, hoping that I would get something decent done and try to jew some money through donations or whatever

Don't want to discourage you but if it's your first game it probably won't be very profitable. Most "indie success stories" come from seasoned veterans. But I guess as a plan B you could always put your game into shitty game bundle XIV, I don't know how much income they make but it seems reliable enough.

Something is better than nothing.

e994d2 No.20316

I work as a server administrator for a Fortune 500 company, which sounds a lot more profitable than it actually is (I make enough to get by, but I'm actually severely underpaid for my job description). The plus side is that I work second shift, meaning after 5 PM rolls around I'm able to fuck around and do whatever I want for a good five hours, which I either spend learning to dev or playing vidya (since not shit happens during the evening).

So I decided to take the advice to not give up on jobs while I am working on my game.

I got a new supermarket job and I work between 12 and 14 hours, and when I got home, I eat, shit and wash and the other random activities like making food/shopping.

I am left with like 6 hours of fucking free time, which is actually sleep time. How am I supposed to sleep less than 6 hours and stay sane for programming, drawing and all that? How the hell do you guys deal with it? I can't get hired part time because I barely got this job anyway after 3 months of trying. I mean if I can't do the thing that I like I might as well jump off a building.

JUST

end me right now

1) Reduce your spending

- eat shit food (rice/pasta is really cheap)

- live with roommates

- downgrade to a shitty internet connection

- downgrade to a more limited mobile phone plan

- stop buying anything that isn't essential

- stop drinking and smoking

- buy store-brand everything

Hopefully you can then afford to work less.

2) Free up your time

How many hours a week do you work on average?

At 40 hours/week you have shittons of time.

- Stop watching TV

- Stop hanging out on 8chan and IRC

- Eat and cook as quickly as possible

- Clean as you dirty things, not all at once

- Shower faster

- Never sleep more than 8 hours, unless catching up on lost sleep

3) Just fucking start

Ideas are more important than writing code; though writing code fosters intuitive understanding that's critical. Once you have the basic ideas down spend time when you drive or do easy work writing programs in your head.

>6 hours sleep

Pleb, I sleep for mostly 3-5 hours ever since underagedfag, and 6+ occasionnaly on a very lucky day

(insomnia a bitch, and mind can't stop thinkin bout shit stuff at night)

Go get some energy drink, or coffee but dont overdose.

Sugar + lack of sleep makes you dizzier,

never drink coffee @ exactly 6/12/9 hour +-30 mins or you'll end up making yourself sleepier due to increased adenosine receptors.

NEVER drink coffee (or caffeine) after wake up, wait at least 1 hour or you bombard your brain with adenosine+caffeine making you dizzy as ever

4) Don't do your games in C++.

I you want to start quick and fast, use Game Maker or some shit like that.

Writing code is a very long process: conception + construction + tests, not just pissing code quickly.

It's allowed, and still profitable, but the market is becoming hugely saturated with furry porn.

>> I'm waiting for the market correction to finally cull all the shitty indie devs

Protip: These devs you speak of aren't going away any time soon. Why? Because they're becoming the product of other peoples ventures.

A good example is all of the early release games on Steam.

It's going to take a very large pile of shit before this will calm down.

To further that, soon there will be an influx of shitty devs doing early release stuff for the wide range of VR devices that will be clumped into one or two main APIs being used by everyone.

It begins.

>j-just draw fursmut and ull be rich like that one guy!

This is not the case. You have to be a bit of a big name to make REAL money. There's always been tons of free fursmut out there. Also, it takes time to git gud. You may as well get a real job unless you're drawing furmut for other reasons (i.e. you genuinely enjoy doing it)

The REAL good scam is tabletop games. Wargames aren't very saturated, since it's all about dat 40k and people clamor for anything new. Hype some stuff up on reddit and 4chan, get a kickstarter going, print maybe an initial set from some cheap 3d printer service, and then take the rest of the money and run. Worst case is the kickstarter fails and you can genuinely say "we didn't even make enough for one set lol" and have a bunch of non-refundable dosh. Best case, there's enough actual interest in your game that it takes off.

>>21834

This is why I'm sticking to mod scenes for specific communities/games. Literally no one wants your CS clone, but there's still a dozen people out there who might want your CS surf map, nah mean? You won't make money off it, but it's easier to get your stuff out there.
