How did they achieve the physics in Red Faction without lagging everything?

e79158 No.20961

For one thing, there's very little interaction between the debris. the pieces just fly through eachother. Another thing I remember is the pieces rolling in weird ways suggesting that the collision bounds are very simple.

You gave me nostalgias tho

>tfw main exit blocked, troops everywhere, out of ammo

>topple a chimney and escape through it

Try watching past the first minute of the video.

Oh yeah, Red Faction: Guerrilla that broken piece of shit. First time I decide to install it and then try and play it I keep crashing to desktop. Haven't touched it since and it's been several years. I really can't be assed when even a game that isn't that old won't run.

Reminds me of ArcaniA that I got for free on Steam. I just installed it and tried starting a game, but I kept falling through the ground no matter how many times I tried, so I never did play that either. Heard it's a piece of shit anyway, so I was probably saved by a bug.

I played Red Faction 1 and 2 though, but I've got those on PS2.

Find me one game that does destruction better on a comparable scale.

>Game footage immediately displays something done poorly

>"N-no stuff happens later that makes up for this simple, glaring flaw!"

Try finding me a video where the first minute isn't complete shit.

In Left 4 Dead zombies can tear shit up and it doesn't fall through the fucking floor.

e633d6 No.20990

To answer the OP's question, it only really looks good from a distance. If you actually pay attention, you can see that they failed on a lot of simple, basic shit.

left for dead also has jack shit in terms of scope, very small levels.

It's not that they failed, it's just that they eliminated certain unnecessary computations to achieve the overall result.

They were clever. Most debris falls through the ground but will interact with other derbis. A notable example is in EOS there are office buildings (2 side by side normally). Hit something on the roof and it knocks shit down on the floors below it. By the time most things hit the ground they can dissapear keeping the amount of physics calculations low.

>>20961

>For one thing, there's very little interaction between the debris. the pieces just fly through eachother.

Some yes. I noticed metal support structures fall through parts they were touching originally but hit other parts.

>suggesting that the collision bounds are very simple.

Yes. Roughly square chunks of rock can have perfect rectangular prisms that behave the same.

>>20964

gotta keep that cpu load low.

>>20990

Of course. Is there anything that comes close though?
