They were clever. Most debris falls through the ground but will interact with other derbis. A notable example is in EOS there are office buildings (2 side by side normally). Hit something on the roof and it knocks shit down on the floors below it. By the time most things hit the ground they can dissapear keeping the amount of physics calculations low.
