Why would you ever use a boat to represent a ship? That's just asking for confusion.

He ought to use a generic ship outline for ships.

I am trying to pick more distinctive and recognizable ones for the whole class. Different eras of similar things would be abstracted as different levels of the same class. (It might be fantasy settings anyway.)
