930761 No.22518

I had an idea to help out newbie game designers (such as myself) that just recently bought GameMaker off of HumbleBundle, or happen to be getting started for whatever reason.

What if we have a annual "Basic game creation" competition? We all agree on a basic concept that's fairly simple and straight forward, and shouldn't take an incredible amount of time to create. While making it, everyone can ask for help, see how other people are tackling problems, and at the end we see how each person took the same basic directions differently.

The idea is to have newbies be able to look at different ways of tackling different problems, and give them something specific to all look at and talk about together.

What do you guys think?

I didn't pick up gamemaker so I'm not able to contribute. Just here to encourage. :^)

Just like make game, folks!

549f58 No.22521

Mite b cool. Too bad I don't use gamemaker

992b25 No.22522

I'd be down for this, we don't have to use gamemaker do we?

And annual? How about monthly?

c5bbad No.22526

So would we NEED to use gamemaker? Also, how would we decide on what genre of game t do? Or would we do a more broader spectrum of what type of game it would be.

068d4d No.22527

Why don't you just pick up an engine, google tutorials and follow the manual, this is a waste of time.

Eh, when did HB sell GameMaker?

Anyway, I like the idea of having local jams. Might be cool, but the board is too slow to have enough participants. I'd probably take part but without GameMaker.

Timescale definitely should be much smaller, month or weeks.

>using trash game maker

>not using c++ or python

You might as well kill yourself.

I'm in. I have pretty much no knowledge of gamemaker and I'll be using the free version.

Down for this. What theme should we go with?

53961c No.22547

>>22527

Not really. It's a good motivation, working on a project when others are also working on similar stuff, and having a deadline. It's why NaNoWriMo works.

Meanwhile you get a natural support group.

>>22528

>Eh, when did HB sell GameMaker?

P recently. I missed it only because I don't have a fucking credit card or Paypal account. Sad times. Humble Bundle hates people outside the US, I guess.

How big do we go with this though? I don't think a full blown jam would work, a lot of people here are struggling to find time and will to do their own project let alone a jam with a game idea chosen for them they don't have to like.

I'd be in for very small stuff, that a beginner wouldn't be scared of and a semi-experienced dev could put together very quickly and it wouldn't take much of his time.

For example flappy bird, snake, block pushing puzzle.

b92e76 No.22563

Maybe we could have a "hall of fame" sticky?

Basically after each competition the 3 best games/devs win 1st, 2nd and 3rd place on a hall of fame that the board owner updates and keep stickyed.

a5031a No.22564

>>22563

I don't think we should make it a competition but an exercise. Like OP said, we help each other, ask questions, we share solutions and ideas.

>>22558

I second that.

7e59d1 No.22571

I'd be up for a minijam, but I wouldn't be using gamemaker to do it.

You should get a stickied thread for this, and then I'll invest a couple hours into the event and put out the source code.

So who's gonna try to organize the thing?

930761 No.22579

>>22576

OP Here, I could try my hand in organizing it for a bit, but I don't want to commit to doing it long term. First thing we would need is a basic idea to agree to work under. Anyone have ideas/

Second try with that. This laptop is regrettably running win10, and apparently chrome canary didn't want to open the filechooser window.

891206 No.22592

>>22579

Why not start with flappy bird just to see how it goes?

You can literaly make it in a minute in gamemaker, but we can still put our own TWISTS in it.

c0a9f1 No.22600

I'd be down for a jam if it happens.

3fbfd6 No.22601

>>22579

Yeah, I guess we could go through games with trivial mechanics as a start. Mentioned flappy bird, pong, Tetris, etc. It's easy for starters and if you have time left you could always spice your game. I'd rather go for 1 week timeframe.

It would be nice to keep theme/mechanics secret before the actual jam but announce jam beforehand. Main point of jams is having limited timeframe, deadlines help getting shit done or recognise that you won't make it. If the theme is known beforehand, it's easy to stretch the timeframe. If jam starts unannounced, people might not want to join in the middle.

Although the board is very slow so there might be no point in trying to do the jam that way.

I'm in when is this starting?

On Saturday OP should create a new thread linking to this one. That'll give everything a fresh start.

Fucking timezones. I guess the jam will start when I'll wake up on the Sunday morning.
