793d7e No.24006

This week's theme is "shmup" and the deadline is Sunday, November 29 at 6pm UTC + 1.

link to the jam on gamejolt http://jams.gamejolt.io/agdg

Rules

1. Just like make game

2. submit you game on gamejolt before the deadline and add the #agdg tag to make it part of the jam

4adba5 No.24008

I really don't want to be an ass here but you should've put a little bit more effort into this gamejolt page. I mean, it's probably not the last jam we're doing so naming it "agdg" is kinda pointless since we won't be able to reuse it.

793d7e No.24009

>>24008

as far as i can tell you can't reuse names anyway

i figured since it's the first one on gamejolt it doesn't really matter

every subsequent one we can just ad the theme to the name

Me again, I've added player movement and added that the player looks at the cursor and that enemies look at the player.

Next I'll make the enemies be able to "see" the player (I think I have a good way of doing this) as well as adding walls to hamper their vision.

File: 1448541270693.webm (7.49 MB, 876x494, 438:247, shmup.webm)

My first days progress. Got my main menu (pretentious and everything), movement, shooting, a basic destructible mob, moving background and asteroids. Although the asteroids can't be destroyed yet. They're mostly for the environment

Oh and upgrading so it switches to 1, 2, and 3 shots. It'll become five. Right now I just hit G to do it so I'll need to make it a powerup or upgrade or something

Also I need to fix it so the music keeps going, it's pretty jarring when it stops

8160a8 No.24097

File: 1448647047734.webm (7.17 MB, 768x480, 8:5, shmup2.webm)

Did more work today. There's a noticable bug where the blue boxes I use for targetting stay on the ships after they die, but I need to take a break for now.

Next I'll add enemies that shoot tonight, then tomorrow I'll make like 3 levels with different stuff and an endless level so It can be an actual game. And also I need to add a droppable for upgrades at some point (I was thinking of having the ship either warp, or have a station appear that the ship flies into, and maybe you can buy upgrades? Eh that'd be nice but maybe too much work for the gamejam, given it's due Sunday, and really a droppable will accomplish the same thing.

Ohh, and the health system so it's actually a game and there is risk. I'll do that today/tonight when I get back.

8160a8 No.24100

>>24097

>>24076

Whelp that was a grand old waste of time

I put a script in without thinking that spawned my targetting graphic whenever an enemy entered within range. But I forget to set it to not detect itself, so it tried to spawn a graphic every time it spawned a graphic, resulting in a crash..

and now UE4 won't let me back into my main pawn with most of my important triggers.

ayy lmao

Guess that's what I get for being an enginefag

I actually know what the problem is, pretty easy to see with fresh eyes after sleeping.

Basically the shooting function doesn't know when the turret direction/movement started or stopped, so it adjust the position of bullets both too early and too late.

I thought I fixed this yesterday, but it turns out I just matched the shooting speed with deltatime or something so the problem wasn't visible.

I just spent like 4 hours trying to fix it, but after thinking about it really hard, I came to the conclusion that what I had in the beginning should have definitely been correct.

Here's my unpolished turd of a game (love2d)

http://jams.gamejolt.io/agdg/games/agdg-minijam-shmup/110679

Sources & info: https://gitgud.io/Jazz/shmup

Got relatively mixed feelings about love2d and lua in general, not sure if I'll used them again. Primarly because of lua, it seems to be unfit for writing everything in it. No mature solid tools, lack of crucial syntatic sugar, libraries are complete mess, no compile-time error checks due to it's interpreted nature, etc.

Also jam ends in 3 hours, I guess we should come up with the theme for the next jam ASAP

File: 1448814027338.png (7.12 KB, 800x620, 40:31, tinyshmup.png)

Realized I couldn't finish my original project so I started from scratch trying to make a minimalist shooter in a couple of hours.

Nearly got my minimal requirements.

Only thing missing would be enemies shooting at the player, would only be a handful lines of code, but I don't have anymore time right now.

The code is utterly horrid but I put it in a pastebin if you want to see it anyway.

Finally done in the last minutes:

http://gamejolt.com/games/generious-god-agdg-minijam-4-shmup/110711

Created in GMS which was quite pleasant to work with. The biggest pain in the ass was the particle system which isn't that bad if you don't deviate too much from the examples.

I implemented a hijack and eject mechanic, i.e. you can take over every enemy (which also means walls and the final boss) and play as them.

Otherwise pretty standard

I'm sure I could have made some kind of asteroids-tier RNG shmup today. At least I learned some trigonometry and got a little more experience with delta-time, so it wasn't all for nothing.

793d7e No.24157

>>24155

yeah i was thinking this maybe getting like a two week or ten day period would be better

it would allow for slightly more complicated game themes to

4adba5 No.24158

>>24157

Ten day period doesn't make a lot of sense for people with traditional job schedule since most of the work gets done during weekends. But I guess we could have extended deadlines because why not.

Also you didn't finish your submission process.

368733 No.24159

>>24157

Really depends on what people are using or where they are starting from.

I'd never really made a game that wasn't console/ncurses based so this week was me learning about sfml and getting a working shmup demo. Hopefully next one I'll find it easier to get to the game part of the jam and not get stuck on making another engine.

From Friday to the next week's Sunday would give 2 weekends. That would also give a 4 day break for cooling down and deciding the next theme.

It would work as a long-term schedule at least. But I dunno if we're ready to commit to such a thing.
