aseprite

The older build is free so you can download that or you can compile the latest source code yourself.

There's also the latest builds floating around the net, people build them quite regularly.

It's also super easy to just build yourself anyway. Get the dependencies and use CMake.

I use Graphics Gale. It's a little fiddly to make animation with it though.

aseprite.

It's 100% free and open source, the github link is even on the homepage, albeit easy to miss.

I say this because it seems that some people seem to think that the program is proprietary.

I'm quite new to compiling software from github, and I can definitely say they knew what they were doing when they made the source free and the binaries $15
