"The Depression Cure: The 6-Step Program to Beat Depression without Drugs" by Stephen S. Ilardi

The book describes a lifestyle program that wards off depression. Enlightening (explains a ton of just what depression is... basically, our brains are being ruined by the modern western lifestyle), and very easy to read. The program consists of 6 parts:

1. Fish oil
2. Engaging Activities
3. Light exposure
4. Exercise
5. Social contact
6. Sleep

Highly recommended for anyone strugglig with depression.

They make some points I think are accurate. They miss one, though: very early on when you meet someone and start dating, they want the arrangement to be tentative while they check you out. Being too "nice" puts them in a position where by convention, they are "obligated" to be "nice" back, or risk looking rude. They don't want to be in a position like that when the relationship is tentative, and if they are afraid of being forced into it too soon, they will bail out.

Also if you want to learn Microsoft office, this site has video tutorials on both older and newer versions of Office. These are the programs used by most big companies so knowing your way around them is key. Some of them are just really handy. Excel spreadsheet is a godsend when you know how to use it.

1. iTunes has a particularly great catalog of free university courses.

2. TTC courses are usualy decent. The "other" video section on tpb is full of them.

3. Udemy is also decent, but definitely more cluttered with yoga instructional escapism

4. I almost went through a full semester of History of the English language by loitering in the classroom after my class finished.

Loiter hard my friends

An interesting thing I've noticed is that twenty minutes is an ideal time for me to do practice and training-type activities.

I'm talking about things like lifting, walking, meditating, etc. Anything that you just have to set aside some time to do daily or every other day, but there's nobody or anything there to push you.

This feels like an optimal amount of time because it's not too long nor too short. It's long enough to feel like you put in some effort but not so long you start to get bored.

Twenty minutes is my sweet spot. What's yours?

File: 1423326007116.jpg (208.54 KB, 1280x854, 640:427, egg-timer-173516_1280.jpg)

The Pomodoro Technique uses periods of fifteen to thirty minutes, and the traditional period they'd use was twenty-five minutes.

http://pomodorotechnique.com/

I notice that when I'm doing housework and I time the bursts of activity, they usually end up being more than twenty-four but shy of twenty-five minutes.

I came up with a method similar to The Pomodoro Technique that's somewhat inverted: I try to work on something for at least twenty-five minutes without getting distracted or even looking at the timer. If I'm pretty confident that I've worked for at least that long, I go back to the timer and check. If I fell short of twenty-five minutes, I reset it and try it again immediately. You then have an incentive to stay focused for that long and not be distracted and you may find you've done more work than twenty-five minutes (it's not uncommon to get almost thirty-five while you think you've done twenty-five).

I had a few influences in coming up with this system: The Now Habit by Neil Fiore, where he tells you to keep track of how long you spend on tasks on which you typically procrastinate to track your progress, but tells you not to count them unless they exceed some set period you decide (I think his is between fifteen and thirty minutes) in order to keep you focused. I was also influenced by a study that I saw about the 10,000 steps program, where it noted that people walked more steps if they had a step counter with a cover on it to keep them from looking at it throughout the day (but I can't remember if they were told not to look at it, or if just using one with a cover made people less likely to look at it). Nonetheless I find I tend to work longer stretches if i "gamify" this effort.

I tried Pomodoro. It's effective, but not for me. It's about as effective as drafting out a plan and sticking to it with some goal in mind.
For example, with books, I count out all the exercises and pages and have a set goal per day to finish it within a set time. If I were to do it with exercise, I would do some energy intake and expenditure calculations.

I've been using the pomodoro technique and generally use periods of about 20 minutes.

Lately I have been worried about the effects of chronic sitting so I set an alarm on my laptop to go off every 15 or 20 minutes. Then I take a 1 or 2 minute walk. It seems to work pretty well.

Walgreens A thru Z would be the only one I take. I take a lot of other medications for conditions I have and I tread carefully on introducing more things into the mix.

I remember hearing about nootropics in the early nineties, and around that time you would see "smart drinks" at raves as well, which I tried once. I went looking for them at a health food store a few years later and the woman there didn't know what I was talking about, but asked me about what foods I was eating (college dormitory cafeteria food) and cringed at it, while suggesting that stagnant food it my intestines might be fermenting and sending toxins into my bloodstream. I gave up looking for them after that.

What does it mean to you to live an /alpha/ lifestyle?

To me, it is very simple. It is about allowing yourself to feel however you want to feel about things. Society says you must feel certain ways. You must feel good or bad if according to if certain things happen to you in life or not.

Also it means to me that you primarily are not a follower of others, and you desire to cultivate your own "thing" whereby others will follow you (business, creative work, blog, religious cult, etc.)

 No.297

Certain people would label what you describe as "zeta" rather than "alpha" (this is not the same as "omega").

So there is this Dutch guy named Wim Hof that came up with a method for tolerating extreme cold temperatures. You might have seen him in those shows about real life superhumans.

I thought /alpha/ would be interested in this blog post summarizing his technique. It would be a pretty... cool... skill to have.

What does /alpha/ think of Whiplash? It's a movie about a drummer who wants to become one of the greatest. I saw the trailer on a TV with the sound turned down before work today and became fascinated when I saw the conductor throw something at the student and start yelling, and that the drummer was playing drums while he was bleeding. I have some thoughts about what I've seen so far but I'd like to put it out for your comments first.

 No.274

This looks interesting, I'll have to check it out. I'm not a big movie watcher but I've always like that actor (J.K Simmons)

 No.286

It's up for an Academy Award - best picture.

http://oscar.go.com/nominees/best-picture/whiplash

When I saw the trailer, I thought it would be some obscure little film that would be well-liked by those who saw it, and might spread to select people (like music students) at a steady pace over time. Now it looks like it will be pretty commonly-known. I haven't met anyone who's mentioned it by themselves, though.
