The 20 Minute Rule

An interesting thing I've noticed is that twenty minutes is an ideal time for me to do practice and training-type activities.

I'm talking about things like lifting, walking, meditating, etc. Anything that you just have to set aside some time to do daily or every other day, but there's nobody or anything there to push you.

This feels like an optimal amount of time because it's not too long nor too short. It's long enough to feel like you put in some effort but not so long you start to get bored.

Twenty minutes is my sweet spot. What's yours?

Discuss

What does it mean to you to live an /alpha/ lifestyle?

To me, it is very simple. It is about allowing yourself to feel however you want to feel about things. Society says you must feel certain ways. You must feel good or bad if according to if certain things happen to you in life or not.

Also it means to me that you primarily are not a follower of others, and you desire to cultivate your own "thing" whereby others will follow you (business, creative work, blog, religious cult, etc.)

Hypnosis

My Dad got me a Paul McKenna book w/ CD for becoming more happy. I researched this author more and I have been listening to this (vimeo.com/36462664) confidence increasing hypnosis track I found (I d/l the video with youtube-dl and ripped audio with ffmpeg) for about 10 days at night when I get in bed. I think it is doing something, but I want to give it more time. Anyone here tried hypnosis before?

The Iceman

So there is this Dutch guy named Wim Hof that came up with a method for tolerating extreme cold temperatures. You might have seen him in those shows about real life superhumans.

I thought /alpha/ would be interested in this blog post summarizing his technique. It would be a pretty... cool... skill to have.

What does /alpha/ think of Whiplash? It's a movie about a drummer who wants to become one of the greatest. I saw the trailer on a TV with the sound turned down before work today and became fascinated when I saw the conductor throw something at the student and start yelling, and that the drummer was playing drums while he was bleeding. I have some thoughts about what I've seen so far but I'd like to put it out for your comments first.

A consistent problem I've had all my life is that I really, really have trouble starting things. Once I've gotten going I'm usually fine, but I usually have a huge mental block keeping from starting shit i gotta do.

I know that ultimately, I just have to force myself to start, I'm wondering if you folks have any ideas on more effectively forcing myself to start tasks and remain focused?

Setbacks

What is the most difficult challenge you've faced so far on the road to self-improvement and becoming /alpha/?

For me it's been those times when things seem to be going great, and then shit happens and you feel like you're back to square one.

You aren't really back at square one though, you've probably made a lot of progress, but it's hard to find that motivation again when life knocks you down.

Recently I felt I was truly on the path to getting my shit together. Most of my major challenges seemed to be overcome, and things were looking up: I was exercising regularly, using the internet productively, and was on good terms with everybody in my life... then shit happened in quick succession (a death, the holidays, family drama) and I seemed to disconnect from all the progress I was making.

I stopped exercising, went back to obsessively wasting time online; shit, I even stopped brushing my teeth for a while.

I've started picking up the pieces again, but it's been a good reminder to be ready for setbacks. It could be a good idea to put plans in place for what you'll do not if but WHEN things in your life take a sudden turn for the worst and you lose your motivation... sort of like the way Batman is always ready for when shit hits the fan.

What would you do if you were me?

I'm 24 years old, was diagnosed with cancer three years ago right after my mother also had a relapse with cancer and passed away from it. Before any of that, my father had also passed away when I was 16. When my father had passed away, I missed a week's worth of school and didn't have much of an opportunity to cope with him passing. Also, with my mother I didn't have any outlet to cope with, since I had been diagnosed with cancer just a few months later after her passing.

I know that I've been affected by my parents passing and having my own battle with the disease, but I've persevered without the aid of any antidepressants and minimal exposure to therapy. I didn't have to go through any type of treatment for my cancer, but did have to go through an extensive period in where I may be at the risk of relapse; it's fine now. In the time which I'd go through these checkups, I was living with an estranged sibling and the situation there was tense enough that it resulted to me using my inheritance to live on my own.

Throughout the checkups, my mother being so sick in which I needed to be by her side until the day she passed, and going to school, I've been feeling considerably out of sync with who I was prior to all what was going on. What might have been an existential affair on the life that I was leading at the time was really just a way for me to find out who I really am. In lieu of sleeping away my life, I sought out help through psychiatry.

And here's where I am right now:
>24 going on 25 in 2 months
>haven't finished university
>diagnosed ADD-PI
>can't take medication (Vyvanse) as it exacerbates depression and irritability in me
>have been unemployed for 3 years
>collecting social security from having 0 parents
>don't have family except for SI (who can only do so much for me)
>took up a course in front-end dev and am trying to get a job in it, but have little to 0 motivation in doing anything
>need constant handholding

I want to be able to get better, but I don't know what I should do. I know that I've been given a horrible hand, but I don't see it as a setback. I feel physically unable to compete, my energy is drained and I can't focus unmedicated.

I'm willing to do therapy, but I don't have a source of income or any help to put me through it. I just want to be able to code, so I can eventually become full-stack and work enough so that I can go to school for what I was doing before I had to drop out, which was C.S.

I know that this is probably more to handle than the muh feels, so I won't put my hopes up.

I've just been stuck inside my house for the past 7 months, with no place to go and no motivation to do anything. The last semblance of a routine ended just a week ago when I finished my front-end course. I need to get in the feel of things again, but I don't know how rehabilitate that in myself.

Any advice? Therapy? Psychiatry?

Start your new year's resolutions now.

In a way, I think new year's resolutions are silly, because if you want to do something you should try to begin as soon as possible, but I do recognize that there's a certain momentum that is convenient to catch when many people around you are also trying to accomplish new things.

But I'll tell you something: I think that if you begin now, rather than a few days from now, you might be more successful.

For one, a lot of these goals require a certain amount of set-up. If you want to go to the gym regularly, there is the business of signing up, for instance. If you get this out of the way before the new year, you can hit the ground running on January 1st.

I also think that it will keep you from losing that new year's momentum. If it takes a few days past January 1st to start, you might even give up before then. So start now and even if you run into some setback before then, you can get right back up and keep going before the new year even starts.

Also, you might just be sitting around a lot the next few days anyways.

Also: this thread can serve as a new year's resolution general thread.

Conquer your fears

Fears. We all have em. This here is a very good introduction to facing fears using exposure therapy.

http://gettingstronger.org/2012/12/conquer-your-fears/

>Let me give an example of exposure therapy to treat a fear of snakes. If you fear snakes, you should first make a list of possible exposure experiences, and then rank these from hardest to easiest, with 100 being intolerably high fear, and 0 representing no fear at all...

If you make a list for any particular phobias, feel free to share them, or we can help each other come up with possible actions if we're stuck.

I'd heard the personal-finance concept of "minimalism" a few times in the last year or two, but haven't really looked at it too far in depth other than some writing by Aaron Clary in Bachelor Pad Economics. The link leads to a list-style treatment.

Henry Rollins: The One Decision that Changed My Life Forever

Ever since I first saw a small part of an interview with Henry Rollins on 120 Minutes in the nineties, I've admired his approach to a positive attitude. Years later I saw this video which I saw as being in line with what I knew about him earlier. I posted a reference to him in another thread, so I thought I'd put this up.

I also found the 1992 interview that I originally mentioned, which I'll post after this.

What does shitposting teach us about being /alpha/?

I can remember really starting to be cognizent of the cancer that was killing halfchan /b/ when the doubles guy showed up. Here are people who are wasting time - but what is really going on when they do this? It seems that people can get into some weird sort of rut where they are too lazy to get up and do something, but still want their mind "stimulated" to some degree, so they spend an afternoon "rolling" to try to see a pattern of numbers come up on their screen, which occupies them enough so that they don't think of going and doing something else. It really makes you think about the habits of human nature - are there other things that are less obviously useless that you are doing?

Another is the "passive request" that you see sometimes on topic forums, like "how can I invest $X" on /biz/ or "redpill me on X" in /pol/. The mind gets satisfaction from having other people find the answers, and whatever need might rouse a person to the action of finding out for yourself is squelched.

Has anyone else observed similar "anti-patterns" on imageboards or other message boards?
R: 2 / I: 1 / P: 3
OK - how many of you have your mind wandering on to all the things that you want to accomplish now that you are relaxing and spending some time with your family? It's interesting how our mind wants to work, or at least brainstorm about work, after a certain amount of leisure.
R: 3 / I: 0 / P: 3
I'd like to make an appeal, /alpha/, just like other appeals are being made at the end of this year.

This board is somewhat unique in the world of anonymous imageboards; I can think of only one other board like it, and it was inactive last time I checked. It is rare to see a forum dedicated to self-improvement in general in this sphere.

And, it's also rare to see a forum dedicated to self-improvement that gives the privilege of posting anonymously. It doesn't take a lot of thinking to figure out the advantage of this: when you have an identity on a forum, and it's full of people trying to be alpha, they can start to fight to try to be an alpha amongst alphas. Here, you have no reputation to try to establish, so your ideas stand or fall on their own, and there's no distraction of trying to gain esteem among the pack.

I'm not appealing for money, of course, though it may be a good idea to throw some toward the operation of ∞chan. (I'm not even the board owner of /alpha/.) What I would like to see is for our few readers to prize the uniqueness of our venue here, and contribute in posts! Of course we want to avoid two things, low-quality posts, and cancer, and it may not even be a good idea for the board to get very popular as fewer good posters would be more valuable than many mediocre ones, but I'd like for people to consider that if they were waiting for a reason to try to get them to find something quality to post and post it, here it is!

Thank you all.

Simple, effective productivity hack

http://www.vox.com/2014/12/8/7352833/procrastination-psychology-help-stop

>SL: What's your one biggest tip for stopping procrastination?

>TP: One of my pet expressions is "Just get started." And it’s important you don’t say "Just do it" — that’s overwhelming. But just get started.

>Whenever we face a task, we’re not going to feel like doing it. Somehow adults believe that their motivational state has to match the task at hand. We say, "I’m not in the mood."

Basically, what do you do once you've made your plans and decided what needs to happen? Well, you can just ask yourself, "How can I get started?" and jump right in. Just think of any part and get going.

An amazing thing tends to happen, which is that once you've picked a starting place, the rest of the activity just seems to flow.

Define Your Work

Pocket recommended this article to me:

https://zapier.com/blog/scale-yourself-scott-hanselman/

I got one really good thing out of it:

>Defining Work - You sit down and think about what work you need to be doing

>"How often have you actually put on your calendar one-hour of time to say, 'I'm going to sit down and think about what work I need to be doing.'" he says. "No, we panic and we look at our (to-do list) and we sort it. Then we just kind of freak out for a while and then the (to-do list) gets larger."

>Instead of this haphazard approach, take time to define your work. Allen says it'll take an average of one hour per day for the typical professional.

This is good shit. I used to take time every morning to map out on paper what I wanted to do that day and it made the days much more satisfying... but then I got overconfident and started relying too much on technology and stopped using pen and ink. I fell into the trap of the overwhelming, ever-growing to-do list.

Time to start planning and defining my work for every day again.

In the nineties when I used to use a Franklin Planner, there was a routine that was somewhat like this:

https://hbr.org/2014/06/how-to-spend-the-first-10-minutes-of-your-day/

You'd make a daily task list and prioritize it.

I use GTD now, and the way that it has you approach the tasks is more dynamic (you maintain your lists so that at any given moment you can find what you can do next, which you do throughout the day), but I think it would be satisfying to at least make a preliminary list of tasks that you'd like to get done today in response to this question posed in the article:

>The day is over and I am leaving the office with a tremendous sense of accomplishment. What have I achieved?

That way, at the end of the day, you can actually feel that sense of accomplishment that you planned out earlier. I don't suppose that there is any planning software that combines GTD with an auxilliary daily list, is there? GTD eschews a daily task list simply because your priorities change as you go through the day, but your complete list can get rather big and I'd like to pare it down at the beginning of the day to the most important things if possible.
