For Kanji I reccommend going through kyouiku (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ky%C5%8Diku_kanji ), but don't follow it to strictly. Allow yourself to learn kanji from a grade your not up to yet if you see it commonly. JLPT lists are probably fine too.
I wouldn't take anything I say with really any credence because understanding JLPTN5 is really not much of a credential, unfortunately.
