They make some points I think are accurate. They miss one, though: very early on when you meet someone and start dating, they want the arrangement to be tentative while they check you out. Being too "nice" puts them in a position where by convention, they are "obligated" to be "nice" back, or risk looking rude. They don't want to be in a position like that when the relationship is tentative, and if they are afraid of being forced into it too soon, they will bail out.
