By west do you mean the U.S. big 2, marvel and dc capeshit stuff? If so I think they're fucked for the most part. At best they're treated as an I.P. farm for the movies and toy lines. Some of the independents can fall into the trap of shitty SJW "indie" web comics. Something like The Walking Dead hit the big time with the TV series, but that seems to be the exception and not the rule IMO.
I think creator owned comics are still the best hope for it, but N.America still treats comics as a genre vs a medium of storytelling. If it's not some capeshit, it's some shitty tumblr tier web comic. There still isn't much of a variety compared to euro and jap comics.
