>what is a good alternative that is not 4chan
If you're after speed, there are none, basically it's here or 4chan.
And I think you're looking at the past with rose-colored glasses, I remember there were nights where PPH would hit zero. Back then I too was in a state of despair, but as the months continued to roll on and /a/ continued to refuse to crumble I slowly got used to the way it all ebbs and flows, there's now enough history behind this board that I'm no longer concerned by the thought that the board might one day randomly evaporate.
You're right that /a/ between seasons is worst /a/, always has been always will be. The worst in my opinion was when we first showed up here and the season was just ending, the board was in a state of disrepair because no one had anything to talk about and a good many anons thought the board was doomed. But then the next season started up and /a/ didn't care about the despair and just went on discussing anime.
My honest advice is to stay away from /ameta/, no matter how good or bad things are actually going on /a/ the shitposters who were exiled here will always say things are bad and are in fact the worst they've ever been and /a/ is dying for real this time and so on. The single thing that could actually kill /a/ right now is if the metafags got in and demoralized everyone and convinced them to leave. Make no mistake, the shitposters who have made this board their home (in some cases admitting that they only come to 8ch for /ameta/) have no intention of doing anything constructive for /a/, they're just here to try and burn it down. If you wallow in the puddle of despair/shitposter cum for too long you too may crack and leave, it takes an iron will to remain positive when you willingly and deliberately surround yourself with the negative all the time. Don't give up anon, even if things look superficially bad on occasion I've seen an undercurrent of pure /a/utism lurking below the surface, don't underestimate your fellow anons here, you're not the only one determined to keep the board alive.
