SSL (or TLS actually but everyone still calls it SSL) is the protocol used to encrypt web traffic, you can tell you're using it if the web page says https instead of http. I won't go into details, but one of the things it does is verify that the site you're talking to is actually the site it says it is, not someone e.g. on your WiFi intercepting the traffic. It does this using what are called "certificate authorities" who are companies that say "Yup, that's the site!" when you connect to that site. But that costs money, and nobody is using the site yet, so I didn't bother. Instead, I just have my own site saying "Yup, this is the site!" which is really insecure in the sense that someone pretending to be the site could say the same thing, which is why FireFox (and every other browser) doesn't trust it. However, it's no less secure than just using HTTP.
