Breaking News: Toonz goes Open Source!

TOONZ GOES OPEN SOURCE

Digital Video, the makers of TOONZ, and DWANGO, a Japanese publisher, announced today they have signed an agreement for the acquisition by Dwango of Toonz, an animation software which was independently developed by Digital Video (Rome, Italy).

Digital Video and Dwango agreed to close the deal under the condition Dwango will publish and develop an Open Source platform based on Toonz (OpenToonz). Effective Saturday March 26, the TOONZ Studio Ghibli Version will be made available to the animation community as a free download.

OpenToonz will include features developed by Studio Ghibli (*Toonz Ghibli Edition) which has been a long time Toonz user. Through OpenToonz, Dwango will create a platform that will aim to have research labs and the animated film industry actively cooperating with each other.

With this agreement in place, Digital Video will move to the open source business model, offering to the industry commissioning, installation & configuration, training, support and customization services while allowing the animators’ community to use a state of the art technology at no cost.

Digital Video will also continue to develop and market a Toonz Premium version at a very competitive price for those companies willing to invest in the customization of Toonz for their projects. A comprehensive list of the new services available can be found at www.toonzpremium.com.

Some time ago I became interested in pixel art. The idea was to make awesome 2D art to use in a future game… What a fool I was. Anyway, I'm going to share some great pixel art animation that I saved during that period.

how does /ani/ feel about him?

he hasn't made a single animation in over a year and even that was just his minimal contributions on that starbomb shit that studio yotta made

What makes animation so lively and good looking?
Is it the number of frames? The way you arrange them(The perfect timing and techniques)? The action in itself? What?

Educate me, /ani/.

Flash Substitutes

Well /ani/, I'm at a crossroads here

I've been looking for a good substitute for adobe Flash

before anyone says "Just get flash", I'm just going to preemptively reply with a "no" because I don't like their new CC model & won't support it

so far, the best I can find is Synfig, but even that is kinda crappy. I want something with Flash-esque drawing & onion skinning

Krita now has animation features

This shit is a fucking dream come true.

Takes a short while to get used to the timeline stuff, but it already feels amazing to me.

Need your help again

Welp, hello again. I am that "little shit" (>>738) that wanted to learn some animation. From now on I will call myself DummyBoy and my posts will be more serious.

Here's my progress so far:

1) I downloaded Krita and tried drawing some shit with a mouse. So far I can tell that KRITA IS A TOOL OF FUCKING GODS.

2) I downloaded The Animator's Survival Kit Animated (can't buy it since no money and Ukraine) and started watching it yesterday. A bit difficult to understand for me, but really satisfying to watch. I am definitely hooked up.

So, well, since I want digital animation, I understand that I won't get too far with a mouse, so I need a good graphics tablet. I am considering between Wacom Intuos Pen and Intuos Pro. What scares me in Intuos Pen (according to Amazon reviews) is shakiness of the lines (according to some Amazon reviews) and futureproofing and what scares me in Intuos Pro is the horrible USB. So what is the best and are there any comparable alternatives?

http://animationnation.com/content/h1-b-visa-news-displaced-disney-worker-testifies-us-congress

The national attention that H1-B Visa abuse has garnered in the US lately has finally made it to Capital Hill in Washington DC.

Leo Perrero is the former Disney employee who is leading the effort to put a spotlight on how damaging the practice of replacing American workers with workers imported into the US has become.

The Disney Company that has for a long time been among the most egregious abusers of US law in displacing highly competent long term employees with H1-B visa guest workers. Domestic US employees are forced to train their replacements as a condition for receiving a severance package.

https://vimeo.com/126287950

So this trailer by SPA Studios just dropped yesterday, and everything seems to be in hand-drawn 2D, save for some digital effects like the lighting and the 3D doors.

While I dislike the digital effects and lighting, I can definitely get behind adding textures to character animation, and of course some of these techniques can lead to 2D animation becoming relevant again, as well as a wider variety of visual styles becoming viable for implementation.

Thoughts?

So, how do you guys think volumetric painting and drawing will factor into the future of animation, assuming this aspect of VR/3D art catches on?

R: 10 / I: 2 / P: 3

High FPS animation

What do you guys think of high frame rate animation, for example 48fps or 60fps?

Personally I'm very interested, but I've yet to see a high frame rate animation that was designed to be high frame rate, instead of being interpolated or converted somehow.

Embed related is one of the older blender movies in 60 fps (you must view it in 720p in chrome to see it). It looks bizzare, the flaws in the animation become painfully obvious at high frame rate, not to mention it wasn't that great to begin with, and the eye rolling moments become even more so. I do see some potential in it though. If it was done by a highly skilled company like pixar or dreamworks and it was designed for 60 fps from the beginning, I feel that it might actually look good.

I'm not sure if it can replace the traditional 24fps animation, but I'm still very interested.

Of course traditional 2D animation won't work simply because of the amount of work required fro 60fps animation.

I wanted to try making a character swap animatic kinda thing, nothing fancy

I know I could just draw over frame by frame but my hope was with software that allowed for the import and tracing of video it could be done with some lazy efficiency and make the whole process smoother

I really think that - if we talk about dynamic scenes in eastern animation - they are the best you can see.

Sure there are great animators that can express fluidity, but Ohira/Hashimoto will always win.

R: 25 / I: 11 / P: 3

the origin

alright. lets have a thread to talk about how we got introduced/started on animation.

ill tell my experience.

so as any kid i grow up watching Saturday morning cartoons (loony toons, batman etc.) with a healthy dose of Disney movies and anime (DBZ)

eventually i started making stick figures jump at the corner of my math notebook. and later on i even bought some post-it's and drew sword fight.

but the moment when it really kicked in was thanks to pick related. see we didnt had a computer in my house so i really had no idea about how traditional animation nor digital animation were made. si this was pretty much mmy introduction to the whole thing, and i must say it was great, even with the systems limitations you could still create quality stuff. without even noticing i started using key-frames and squash and stretch. i would come home from school and work on my shitty animations for days. that's when i knew animation was more than just a hobby and decided it would become my future.

so what are your eureka moments? what was the spark that made you follow this path?

CGI Emulating 2D

Can we have a thread on this subject?

Lately, I've been seeing more and more 3D CGI attempting to replicate 2D animation. While in previous years they were laughable, the efforts this year and last year have been particularly impressive and point to a new direction for CG animation now that photorealism is the norm. I credit that to some people with 2D knowledge finally handling the tools and going the stop-motion route instead of motion blur. The Lego Movie particularly impresses me with this trend (it felt more alive than any other 3D movie I went to), and it looks like the next Charlie Brown movie will continue it.

Still some issues bother me, like shaders for cel-shading; the low amount of polygons for each character create jagged edges for the shadows and highlights (another new thing for cel shading) and of course a 3D model is drastically different from a 2D drawing. I can see 3D CGI eventually becoming a viable replacement for producing backgrounds, with texture mapping providing a painting effect, but I still see some problems in terms of character animation, namely smears and rigging and modeling them properly.

I eventually want to try my hand at 3D stop motion animation, though I barely know any of the terminology.

So, what do you think of this trend as it continues to grow? Any tech advice and discussion on this topic?

Animation Practice Guide

ANIMATION PRACTICES

I pulled these from a useful animation website but the source itself has some malicious content within it, so I just copied and pasted it here. These are some very helpful exercises that anyone/everyone should practice.

Feel free to make add and/or make changes to the current list.

Go by one level at a time, once you are knowledgeable about the subject you are currently learning you can move up to the next level of exercises.

>BOLD LETTERING means that it's crucial to learn these animations before moving on.

>*Single Asterisk means that there's a little note when practicing this animation

>Strikethrough means that it's not necessary to do this animation to move on to the next level

(Do not discount their simplicity! Here you have the principals of animation, which all other animation is built on. They are worth your time and effort.)

CHALLENGES

>Level 1

No rough drawings/animation, every animation should have clear and concise lineart

>Level 2

Color each animation. Understand how colors work, don't be afraid to use different colors! For example, make the sky green, the Simpsons did it and people hardly seemed to notice. It doesn't matter if the color isn't what it's supposed to be, the contrast between the colors will make it look nice and pretty.

>Level 3

Add a background, this will help with the story telling of the animation. But note that animation isn't about the background, it's about the actions itself.

>Level 4

Add secondary action with each animation.

>Level 5

Add shadows within the animation

>Level 6

Alter the animation with more or less weight than you desire. Switch it up a bit and try something other than the standard move set.

BEGINNER PRACTICES

>Level 1 Exercises: Simple Objects

Ball Bouncing in place, no decay (loop)

Ball Bouncing across the screen

Brick falling from a shelf onto the ground

>Level 2 Exercises: Character

Character head turn with anticipation

*Character blinking

Character thinking [tougher than it sounds!]

Simple character head turn

*Character blinking should have weight and more than one frame, don't cop out on this

>Level 3 Exercises: Weight

Flour Sack waving (loop)

Flour Sack jumping

Flour Sack falling (loop or hitting the ground)

Flour Sack kicking a ball

INTERMEDIATE PRACTICES

[All of the basics should be known now]

>Level 4 Exercises: Character Intermediate

[THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LEVEL]

Change in Character emotion (happy to sad, sad to angry, etc.)

Character jumping over a gap

Standing up (from a chair)

Walk Cycle [oldie but goodie!]

Character on a pogo stick (loop)

Laughing

Sneezing

Character being hit by something simple (ball, brick, book)

Run Cycle

>Level 5 Exercises: Objects Intermediate

Reaching for an object on a shelf overhead

Quick motion smear/blur

Taking a deep breath [also tougher than it sounds!]

A tree falling

ADVANCED PRACTICES

[You must know the principals of animation before moving on]

>Level 6 Exercises: Character with Object Advanced

Close up of open hand closing into fist

Close up of hand picking up a small object

Character lifting a heavy object (with purpose!)

Character painting

Overlapping action (puffy hair, floppy ears, tail)

Hammering a nail

Stirring a soup pot and tasting from a spoon

Character blowing up a balloon

Character juggling (loop)

Scared character peering around a corner

Starting to say something but unsure of how

Zipping up a jacket

Licking and sealing an envelope

Standing up (from the ground)

Pressing an elevator button and waiting for it

EXPERT PRACTICES

This is professional level animation

>Level 7 Exercises: Character with Object Expert

Character eating a cupcake

Object falling into a body of water

Two characters playing tug-of-war

Character dealing a deck of cards out

The full process of brushing one’s teeth

A single piece of paper dropping through the air

Run across screen with change in direction

Sleeping character startled by alarm then returning to sleepy state

Opening a cupboard and removing something inside

Putting on a pair of pants

Opening the “world’s best gift” and reacting

MASTERY

–Move the camera as the action progresses, don't just pan the camera, move the camera around in a 3-dimensional space

–Add sound effects, voice acting, etc to any of the previous exercises

Webgen Animation General

https://washiblog.wordpress.com/2015/04/09/ryo-chimo-the-digital-animation-movement/

This board needs more life and this post has been out for about a week now.

It's quite a good read and delves into the differences between traditional and webgen animation, both visually and mechanically.

With that in mind, who are your favorite webgen animators? What implications does webgen spell for the future of animation and its workflow? Which are the best sequences available? What are limitations that need to be surpassed, or curbed? Will webgen make animation more viable as a career in the future, or will it be stuck as a niche trend?

>>442 is already an example who's rather popular in the anime community, and Ryo-Chimo and other animators mentioned in the article have been noticed in some works over the past few years. There are also other examples around the world and online, like Studio Yotta, a Western digital collective that encapsulates much of what webgen animation represents.

Do you enjoy animating?

When I see the pictures I drew frame by frame and they finally start moving, I get really excited.

Anybody else like limited animation unironically?
Because I always see people talking about muh framerates and muh fluidity but mostly people dislikes limited animation because of the desings.

I love it and i even have a collection of UPA films on my hard drive.
R: 11 / I: 0 / P: 4
Somebody explain to me this whole framerate craze. Back before Flash and Youtube was such a popular thing I knew the framerate standard for movies was 60 fps and could reach much higher.
Then out of a sudden people talk about The Hobbit's 48 fps like it's a big deal.

I remember that Disney animated their movie cartoons at 48,60,72 frames per second due to cinema requirements. Sometimes even at 120 for a few projects.

Now all I hear is 12 and 24, and people look at me like I'm crazy if I mention anything above 30.

What the hell is going on?
R: 5 / I: 5 / P: 5
since this is my first post in this board, I'll say I love to see a board for art critics.
I would love to learn animation.

I think I have some skills and I have some potential, but I get depressed because I'm not good enough to be Pro and I'm just an amateur.

Here I post some of my works that aren't crap.

The first gif is a traditional animation I tried to do for an idle fighter.
The second gif is something I discovered by myself and is mixing tweening with traditional animation, as the body, arms and legs are tweened but the fingers, hand and hair are traditionally animated.
I like it, but I feel is not as good as traditional animation.

The third one is a sprite I did following the Kof 12 method (pixel art on top of basic 3D).
I really liked it.

The makoto with leona's dress is a drawing that took me 1-2 hours in SAI, pls critique.

The kill la kill is a fanart I did, I think It's fine.

Besides this I want to ask:
What would be the best way to get maximum quality?

I don't care about the effort, I would love to make something as good as the best in the world.

I don't care if I make the basic characters in zbrush and then animate retopologized versions on blender and then use a real life video from a tablet as reference then draw on top the 3D frames.

Is this the way to do it?
would I have the best quality if I follow that method?

What is the elite workflow among animators?

Pls give me tips.

Some animation questions

Hey guys, just started my animation class this semester, and I asked my professor some questions about software. I currently have adobe flash cs6, and learned that the course is going to be taught with toonboom. Do you guys have a preference when it comes to software? My professor says flash is mostly good for games and apps, and that disney and other studios now use toonboom for professionalism. Any good tips for transitioning from one to another? Are there better ones you guys know of? Also, do any of you guys know how about finding voice actors? Any help would be appreciated, there aren't many boards i've found like this one

Big Hero 6

So, I never saw Big Hero 6. Are the Japanese elements important to the story? Or could they easily be removed without affecting it?

Hey guys, so how does compositing an animation work?

How does one go about combining all the frames, effects animation, and mix 2D and 3D in the industry while still maintaining something that looks good?

How often do people use digital aids like color correction in animation?

I propose an idea.
/ani/ should make a short animation, probably something like
>Our own animation
>About 8chan
>About another board (/v/ or /a/)
If anyone is interested, let's get to brainstorming and make something cool.
The video was something /m/ did and I was thinking of something along the lines of this.

Want to do monthly loop work and get rewarded with first place?

or do you just want to see the works by people who might be in the animation business?

http://www.loopdeloop.org/ is the way to go!

anyways post interesting loop animations and animation websites for references.

I need an expert's knowledge here.
How does a show like (webmv related) use the Adobe suite?
Are all the bits and pieces made in Illustrator, then imported to Flash, animated, and then all effects and camera movements done in After Effects? What is done where?

Anyone have perfectly looping animations? They seem to please my eyes for some reason.

Favorite Youtube Series

What are your favorite Youtube animators/series?
I enjoyed Baman Piderman a while ago, it had a fun style in full animation.

Learning to Animate

Getting Started
When learning animation there are certain guidelines you have to follow before you begin.
Rule 1: You must learn how to draw from life before you can animate.
The word animate comes from the Latin verb animare, meaning "to make alive or to fill with
breath." Animation is essentially all about change and bringing things to life, everything changes from frame to frame. But how can you make things come to life, if you can't draw from it. So I suggest learning how to draw before you are ready for the vast realm of animation. In the wise words of Richard Williams, you don't know what you don't know.
Rule 2: HAVE FUN
When it comes to animation you have to be both technical and creative simultaneously. You have to know why you want to learn animation first, it can be to tell a story, make things move, to express oneself, to entertain others or because you simply love to draw. Animating requires you to be passionate about what you're doing. Without that drive, you'll be impatient and incapable to be creative and let's be honest here; No one has the patience to complete a task if they don't even enjoy doing what they're doing. So have fun and be loose, I promise you that your work will improve tremendously.

Lesson 1: Tools and Medium
Prior to my experience, the medium you use isn't as important as one would think.
There are many mediums of animation such as:
-Traditional (Paper and pencil)
-Puppet [Nightmare Before Christmas]
-Live Action
-Cutout [Southpark]
-Computer
-3D
-Mechanical (Animatronics/Puppets/etc.)
-Much, much more

So there are lots of mediums with animation. But these animations are not limited to just one medium! You can mix and match these mediums together and get a nice look and feel.

Lesson 2: Timing and Spacing.
Part One: The Difference
So the best way to explain the difference between timing and spacing is to use the bouncing ball techniques which is a standard to learning the principles of many key essentials when animating.
What is timing?
Timing is the action and rhythm of when something happens. The first pic shows demonstrates when the ball hits the floor and makes a 'boink' every time it hits a floor. It's knowing when something happens at the exact moment.
What is spacing?
The spacing is the distance between how close and far apart the object is in a space of time. For example, (pic 2) things going in a fast pace have far distances apart from each frame and slow paces have small distance apart from each frame.
Timing and Spacing together, as one.
So timing and spacing have to work together well or it won't work at all. To make it work together, you must work on the timing first so that each movement are in a correct space of time so you have a point A to B to work with. Then use the spacing with the frames/time you have to make the animation fluent.

Kinect Mocap

Hey everyone. I bought a Kinect a while ago to try out motion capture, but to be honest I never got around to seriously trying it out.

Anyone got any experience in using Kinect for Mocap? Is it actually any good? What toolset should I be using?

How do I stop my animations from shaking so much? Namely the outlines are trembling even while the character is suppose to be idle.

I heard Blender was a good tool for people who want to learn 3D modeling at the beginner level. Is this true?
