I heard Blender was a good tool for people who want to learn 3D modeling at the beginner level. Is this true?

Blender is a full on 3D modeling/ animation sweet that is close, and if not, within the league of the big boys like Maya and 3D Max.

But it is free, has a lot of good documentation and a strong community that are willing to help. So if you want to learn 3D modelling then this is a good bet to go with if you don't want to bust your bank.

it is good for beginners solely because it's free. i've actually found that AutoCad was far more user friendly (but very expensive)

I heard that modelers and animators separated, is this true?

No clue, but in terms of 3D character animation, I think modeling and rigging are handled differently.

I actually would like to open a thread on 3D backgrounds soon, I find their modeling quite interesting.

This is true in some cases. More true in Big production teams like you would find at AAA game/Main film studios. In any animation project Their is allot to be done, and it helps if you can pitch in where ever you can, or are highly skilled at your area of work. Here is what needs to be done from the top of my head.

film Treatment
Script
concept art
character design
Story boarding
Acting
Tracking
Dope sheets
line testing
Pitch
modelling
Texturing
rigging
Key framing
inbetweenes
clean-up
Rendering
Post production.

A good animator is a swiss army knife of skills that can do not necessarily all of the above, but can certainly do multiple tasks in the work flow.

I find it odd how in some cases character models look shittier than the background, when the enviromental objects and textures are huge and a plenty and you have to work on each individual one, whereas the main character is just one model.
