Can we have a thread on this subject?
Lately, I've been seeing more and more 3D CGI attempting to replicate 2D animation. While in previous years they were laughable, the efforts this year and last year have been particularly impressive and point to a new direction for CG animation now that photorealism is the norm. I credit that to some people with 2D knowledge finally handling the tools and going the stop-motion route instead of motion blur. The Lego Movie particularly impresses me with this trend (it felt more alive than any other 3D movie I went to), and it looks like the next Charlie Brown movie will continue it.
Still some issues bother me, like shaders for cel-shading; the low amount of polygons for each character create jagged edges for the shadows and highlights (another new thing for cel shading) and of course a 3D model is drastically different from a 2D drawing. I can see 3D CGI eventually becoming a viable replacement for producing backgrounds, with texture mapping providing a painting effect, but I still see some problems in terms of character animation, namely smears and rigging and modeling them properly.
I eventually want to try my hand at 3D stop motion animation, though I barely know any of the terminology.
So, what do you think of this trend as it continues to grow? Any tech advice and discussion on this topic?

>>133It also seems that ufotable uses CG models as reference for complex fighting scenes, hence why some of them seem so fluid, and makes backgrounds from CG.

3D replicating 2D is a viable medium to a point but I doubt that it's going to be perfected unless there's a lot of attention to detail.
This sort of animation works really well in film but will never work in games. Games are all generated graphics with set textures, so when you look at a character from different viewpoints it will almost always be a disgusting mess.

Guilty Gear Xrd is kind of a poster child for this.

My opinion on it: high-tech crap. Animation is about creating "the illusion of life", and 3D models just don't feel alive to me. I feel like I'm watching a videogame.

>>301Going off on a tangent but something I was thinking about:
Part of being alive is reacting to stimulation. In that sense, software is animation in spirit, while what is traditionally called "animation" is really just a motion-statue.

A film is only really "animated" while it's being made. When you're drawing the character, or writing the dialogue, thinking like the character and getting into the character's head - that's when it's "alive". Your sweat and tears are what gives them life, and the moment you stop they revert to being inanimate. The film itself is just a corpse.

I'd argue CyberConnect2 is much more familiar making that particular conversion. The Naruto games, Jojo ASB, .Hack (GU in particular,)
Granted their proportions/perspectives can be admittedly a bit "wonky" at times

It's time to bring some life back into this thread.
I might as well post some interesting 2Dish 3D stuff.
Here's a making of for a JP commercial.

The Prophet seems to have some interesting animation that surprisingly isn't out of place.
It seems as long as the cel shading isn't too complicated and realistic you can pass off cartoony 3D animation as being 2Dish.

Here's a demo reel for a JP studio that has done prolific work in 3D for several works of entertainment.
I'm really surprised by some of the mobile game examples, these seem to be an example of 3D being done right as 2D.

So this Animator Expo short just dropped, and it's the best 3D short by far.
Seriously, look at the faces. It'll be incredible if they were all in 3D.
It seems like one solution is to simply minimize the shading and limit the color palette. The character animation is a bit wonky, but otherwise it's spectacular and nearly indistinguishable from 2D, thanks to great cinematography and Shuichi Iseki's directing. Seriously, I thought it was a blend of 2D and 3D until later in the short. I'm still wondering if it was, like the Berserk movies.
I still need to study how the CG environments were done, though.
