what kind of studies or exercises do you guys do to get better at animating? just curious what everyone else does to get gud.

I just do the standard copy frames from favorite footage.

It's best to get either a second monitor or a video player player app for this. You could do it without those, but it's tedious to do it on a single monitor unless if you export that footage onto your software.

It's what the guys in the youtube video do. It didn't help me become pro though. I'm faaaar from it.

There are likely better ways of doing it. I remembered the walk cycle easilyfrom remembering the keys or labels (contact → recoil → passing → high point -→ contact). Perhaps the same can be done for effects and character animation.

I do this too sometimes. I use a program called Kinovea, what's nice about it is that you can draw on top of the video and number the key frames, mark off distances and arcs, draw time charts, write notes etc. You can also re-save the video with the notes intact for future reference. Also make sure to disable persistence in the options if you don't your notes with be visible for the whole duration of the video instead of the individual frame you're writing notes for.

Thank you so much for recommending me that program!

It's been incredibly helpful. It was a total pain for me with my previous workflow lol. I switched between windows constantly on a single monitor.

OP here, I've been these rotation studies with single reference images. It's a good way to learn volume consistency and visualizing forms in 3d space.

Currently making a long list for practicing animation, when it gets posted maybe mod(s) can sticky it.

That's a pretty neat exercise, awesome work.

It's awesome how they're nearly on-model too. I should honestly try it out imo.

Which program did you use by the way? I've been looking for a decent non-vectorized animation software for a while
