Well /ani/, I'm at a crossroads here

I've been looking for a good substitute for adobe Flash

before anyone says "Just get flash", I'm just going to preemptively reply with a "no" because I don't like their new CC model & won't support it

so far, the best I can find is Synfig, but even that is kinda crappy. I want something with Flash-esque drawing & onion skinning

 No.683

Try out Toonboom or Anime Studio, they have a free student edition somewhere.

actually thinking about saving up for it & the storyboard pro

I've been using Pencil2D, which is simple (perhaps too much). It's like MSPaint with a timeline, and it also features onionskin. The brushes feel nice and remind me of Flash's, but I don't think there's any smoothing going on.

Never tried sound, though, just small doodles. I'd say it's very good for those.

Also, animated gif export doesn't work on my machine, but exporting frames individually does.

I thought ToonBoom was free.

would you believe I just stumbled on Pencil & I fell in love with it

only problem is that I can't make actual animated image or movie files with it, but I can just do the various frames & post them into GIMP for that

speaking of, here's the first animation i ever made in it

probably thinking of TBAnimate Pro

discontinued in october

Neat man, it's funny how these things happen.

>I can just do the various frames & post them into GIMP for that

I guess that'd work. I just use Imagemagick to do the conversion automatically from a folderfull of frames.

>>687

That's probably it. What a shame.

I had a conversation with a second-year animation student at SVA and in context what he said was that it doesn't matter what tool you use, just make sure to use it right.

"If you can draw well, you can use any program you want and it'll still look good"

Besides that, I guess get one of the older version of Flash if you dislike the CC model. CS5 still performs decently, in my opinion.

yeah, true that you can do a ton with what you've got. I've seen tons of great art made in little more than MS Paint

but at the same time, there's the fact that many people (myself included) want to experiment with more advanced software & try to do more professional looking things

I'm currently saving up for a better tablet & am trying to get one of my parents to go half with me on it as a christmas present

other than that, I'll probably stick with Pencil for now & just add the detail I want in Paint Tool SAI & my copy of Manga Studio pro

Sai's more my default drawing tool whereas I do more of my lettering & arranging in Manga Studio

and as for the older version of flash suggestion, that's been in my mind, but I probably won't get it. It's discontinued, so it won't be getting updates & will pose more of a security risk over time

plus, I've been looking for animating substitutes that I can help support

if I do decide to go for something more, I'm probably just going to do Toon Boom's Harmony studio after months of saving up

That was a really stupid statement of him.

Just because you can hammer nails decently using a plank or a rock or the handle of a screwdriver, doesn't mean you should use them to hammer in nails.

Having a program that works properly and has the basic necessary features is very important unless you're already well trained or experienced, and even then having a proper program will make you work way more efficiently.

You may think Sai is the best program in the world, but it doesn't come even close to proper animating software for the purpose of animating. I've tried to make animations in photoshop many times before because I hate vector brushes in flash, but every single time I end up spending 80% of my time tinkering with the stupid program because it's so god forsaken inconvenient for animating beyond as gimmick. You could make the same comparison with MS Paint and static images. Just because some autist learned to draw mona lisa in it, doesn't mean it's a viable option for artists who want to draw decent shit. Someone could build a house using rocks as tools, but that doesn't mean rocks are a good option for building houses.

That said, there's a huge scarcity in 2D animation software. All the decent ones are expensive, and none of the free ones are good. It's pretty surprising actually, since it doesn't require much.

 No.785

Just use an older version of Flash. You can find second-hand Adobe stuff on the net for very very cheap.

Much what?

 No.790

An animation program doesn't require many fancy features to be decent. You just need a proper timeline and basic drawing tools and it's already good for many purposes.

have you tried tv paint?

or photoshop

>Photoshop to animate

Wew

 No.794

>>791

TVPaint is so much fun to animate with but it's painstakingly time consuming to complete a full animation.

I'd rather animate in TVPaint because it's designed for animation rather than Photoshop. Animating in Photoshop is like building a house but you have to make all of the bricks yourself

 No.804

Check out PlasticAnimationPaper. Entirely traditional styled program. Pretty fun and rather efficient. Also, why not just torrent an older copy of flash? I still have my disk of CS3 from a few years back and am glad I do.
