The ethics of owning pets
Is it ethical to own or care for intelligent pets?
I have a female cat, never got it declawed, but did get it spayed. Always felt kind of bad about that.
I also keep her inside practically 100% of the time, due to cars, foxes, coyotes, etc, time and time again watching my neighbors they lose their cat to a violent end.
But I also feel bad that I keep her inside all the time. Cats are only half domesticated and they have a strong instinct to hunt.
I have less experience with dogs, but most of them cannot even live on their own.
I'll revisit this thread and expand upon my point, but I used laugh at claims from PETA (I think) that owning pets is immoral. As the years go on with my cat, I'm not sure.
I spayed her, taking away her natural rights, and then at the same time I think she's great. So she doesn't pass on her genes because I spayed her, and future generations of this friendly cat are impossible. The other option is to not spay her, but then she practically has to be kept in a cage in another building on a regular basis (if you've ever been around a cat in heat you know)
Not sure where I'm going with this. If I decide that pets are not moral to own, then that just means that more abandoned pets that are already born get screwed.
It basically reminds me of how I feel about my own life. What is the point? Give a comfortable life? For what purpose?
