I had one a few years back when I went on hiking trips regularly but it broke as soon as the warranty was over. You probably need a bigger one than in OPs pic to charge modern smart phone effectively and they are sort of pricey. The real question is do you need your smart phone after communications went down?

Is having a close group of able and like-minded friends invaluable when shit hits the fan? Physically fit, mentally sound, each possessing skills and assets that may prove useful when the time comes. Perhaps you are now training together regularly. What is the ideal number for such a group? What would your plans be? Might problems arise?

I would agree with you. Again, 4-5 sounds very reasonable. You can't survive for years by yourself - it's simply not possible to be fully self-sustainable without help. That being said, once you have too many people (especially people who do not entirely trust one another) other issues can arise such as mutiny.

When I move to the states with my girlfriend after I'm finished college, we'll check out any local prepping groups. Should be fun.

We could put a whole ton of those electricity-generating stationary bikes in a gymnasium, that way we could all get our regular exercise, and generate electricity as well
Furthermore we could get some of those NASA toilet filtration systems so our waste can be recycled into water, in interviews astronauts have said that recycled water is the cleanest they've ever had

When I try to convey my knowledge to her, she pretends it doesn't exist. I try to teach her practical skills, but she swears up and down that she will never ever need to know them.

Serving who? Like some sort of conspiracy that Big Brother or extremists would gain from it? I would see an apocalypse as a good reason to reinstate National Socialism on a global scale, so in that sense, I'm all for it.

As stated previously, I wouldn't mind. I've already deleted my Facebook and other social media platforms, so I wouldn't be too upset if the internet went down (except for 8chan and Runescape)

Likely it will be economic-based. The dollar plummets, unemployment soars, riots start, etc. However a zombie-type infection scenario could be pretty exciting.
