The old era of anime mainly focused on the science-fiction genre so we'd need a thread on this I'd say, what are you watching?

I'm currently watching Irresponsible Captain Tylor for the first time and having a great time with it. I'm going to watch Nadesico soon after it as I've heard it's quite similar.

What did you think of it, OP?

Well, I really liked the first half of the TV series but the second half was a bit mediocre to be honest. The first half was much more comedy-focused but in the second half they try a more serious political plot which I felt ruined the charm of the show as it was supposed to parody other series in the genre. Also, I feel like in the first half, it was implied that Tylor was secretly a genius who knew what he was doing but pretended to be an idiot while in the second half they change that "nope, he's literally retarded" and it just so happens he has great luck.

The OVAs on the other hand were amazing though; I have never experienced such a difference in quality between a TV series and its specials. The art improved a lot and had a more realistic feel to it, the character designs kind of reminded me of the Patlabor films. They also tried to tell more serious stories here but with these I think they definitely succeeded. I think it worked especially well because they decided to focus a bit more on the side characters who didn't get much screentime throughout the TV show and flesh them out a bit, rather than just making everything about Tylor's shenanigans again.

Recently saw the Nadesico series. The TV series (the main installment of the series) was a bit lackluster and what you could expect from a sci-fi parody series with romcom undertones, though it does very much have its emotional moments. The film is on a completely different level though, both from a visual and narrative standpoint, similar to the Irresponsible Captain Tylor series and really gave you the feeling of watching a more "epic" version of the story.
