After a false start and a long, index hopping slog through reading the book I have decided that listening to The Silmarillion is far superior to reading it because the names are all pronounced for me and the visualization of the poetry is way easier when listening than when reading.

I'm not sad I read it first though. Knowing the characters was important, and I had help with websites that have family trees and such. Very fun, but listening is such a joy.

I wouldn't trade learning the pronunciations.

All copies of the Silmarillion include pronunciation guides.

Who reads the audio book?

I know, and I liked using them, but the interrupted experience when reading it was a hassle. Was more like doing research than reading poetry.

The audiobook is read by Martin Shaw

Well not as if the Simarillion has a lot of poetry in it. I think the most it includes is snippets from Beren and Lúthien

Oh, the English first language problems…

As a Slav, I can just pronounce everything the way it's written and it'll be correct, the only thing I can fuck up is the stress.

Sweet board guys.. here's to hoping it spawns some good discussions though I'm not entirely too hopeful seeing how even /auto/ is pretty dead with 20 some users.

Anyways, here's the reading by Martin Shaw. I've read the text and listened to them and I prefer the audiobook solely because of the way Martin reads it. If it was anyone else I'd probably prefer the text.
