need a non-troll answer
I remember seeing something like this on /ic/ where a red text wrote over said 'no you don't need to, just study construction and anatomy', something like that.
I'm generally confused though
My goal is illustration overall but I don't want to waste years perfecting some realism until I'm 40 or something when I didn't necessarily had to. I think both are important (maybe realism more) but I have to admit that when I see some page learning realism, I get overwhelmed by it.

Fucking colors how do they work
Does anyone have good tutorials on how to pick colors for painting?
I can never wrap my head around this, the selected colors are close to black but they look so white , even the highlight is a medium gray
How can a dark color look light? I really dont get how to do this with coloring
Creative writing.
Creative writing. Tell me what you think.
The darkness of night blankets a grim and monochromatic metropolis. Its polished, rigid geometric urban layout a bureaucratic attempt at hiding the crime and disease lurking beneath its surface. The atmosphere is empty and cold.
The streets are lifeless. Their Lights turn on and off in cycling effect. Alleyways are ominous, filled with transients, minds consumed by nihilism, psychosis and synthetic psychostimulants. Death is waiting just around the corner.
Highrise apartment complexes are filled with worker drone Cro Magnons, running on a fuel mix of left wing philosophy, and cheap, genetically modified food. They're an expendable resource for the global super elite. Existence is bland and meaningless like cheap modern art.
Welcome to high technology Orwellian hell.
Wanted by federal police for thought crimes, you have been forced into hiding. You are in one of the apartment complexes, located in the worst section of the metropolis. Booming electronic ghetto music shakes flaking paint from your rundown apartment walls during the day, while gunshots and blood curdling screams keep your from sleep at night.
You drift in and out of consciousness. Reality and schizophrenic nightmare slowly meld, changing the world around you. It warps and flexes in hallucination. What was once real is now not.
Your delusion becomes a hyperstitional engine, turning your strange ideas into reality. As a result, you can no longer leave the house. You have become a prisoner, and there is no escape.
Desperation intensifies, resulting in thoughts of suicide. Life in a prison in the putrid bowels of hell is simply to much to bear. Its corrupted nature has almost completely drained the life force out of you.
In a moment of pure terror, you grab your martial .50 revolver, aim it at your frontal lobe, and aggressively squeeze the trigger, causing a high velocity round to exit from the barrel, and atomize half of your head. Death is instantaneous.
You are survived by no children.

What's holding you back?
Totally not stealing this thread from /agdg/
What specifically is holding you back from making more art? Lack of time, lack of some skill, lack of direction, or something else that always stops you?
If you don't have motivation, there must be a reason why. Maybe the difficulty of drawing intimidates you, or something.
My problem is I always get stuck trying to get a single drawing right, and then I end up spending so much time trying to figure it out that I either stop enjoying art altogether for a while, and/or have to go to sleep for the day.
Reusing/Destroying old art
Do any of you guys ever destroy your works or recycle them into a new piece of art?
For example I know someone who takes the sculptures that he makes and reuses the armature for something else, or sculpts something entirely different out of something old.
Is it a practice that I should get into?
Migrant from /ic/
Hey guys, I'm a beginner artist here. This might be a dumb question but I'm just wondering if this is a nice place to discuss/properly critique art.
I've had enough of /ic/ and their elitist attitude where they shit on beginner artists because they're beginners and can't draw very well. It's just really discouraging and makes me not want to draw. The board is honestly 80% dickbags who have their heads stuck up their elitist asses.
At the same time, I don't want to go to reddit, as it's too hugboxxy. They would probably think my garbage beginner art is amazing.
Anyway, I lurked a bit here and it seems like a decent place.

Pic related: Adding very tiny amount of very dark color in the darkest corners adds a lot of depth. I often over exaggerate shading because the object looks flat, but I've found that what I was actually missing was much darker shades in creases and corners, because most of the shadows appear in those places rather than on the side of shapes.
Think of it this way; if you're shading 2 floating balls that are in contact, the color in the very middle of them is much darker than any shade on a single ball would be. It may sound obvious when you think about it, but it's not as obvious when you're actually drawing.

I see a lot of tutorials and resources for drawing in general, but specifically I want to know how to color well using colored pencils. It's for a first-time art commission/prize.
I don't want to just fill in shapes with a solid color. I want to know how to draw smooth surfaces, lighter and darker areas, color on top of color, etc. I want to know when I should use color pencils, fluorescent pencils, metallic, watercolor and pastel pencils, and when or if I should use chalk or crayon blocks.

Absolute Beginner
I apologize in advance for making a whole new thread for this, but even the basic threads are far beyond my level. First thing I'd like to know: can some people just not learn art? I'd like to know how to draw, but I'm trash. When I say I'm trash, I mean I have problems even drawing basic shapes, I know no art terms or techniques at all, and even kindergarten-level arts and crafts would take me a little while and wouldn't be as good as the kindergarten kids. Am I just not able to learn art, is it something I need to be born with?
Secondly, is it normal for people to start with this sort of level? I mean, like I said, I can't even draw basic shapes. A stickman is about the extent of my abilities, and I've frankly not tried to draw since I was so little I barely have memories from that time (and even then I didn't draw much). Again, sorry for making the thread, but I'm such a massive faggot that even the fundamentals are beyond me.
tl;dr: suck so bad at art I can't do basic shapes or kiddie arts and crafts, can and how do I learn
Pokemon Art Academy
I can never find the time to actually use my shitty tablet and draw when I'm using my PC, so I was thinking about downloading Pokemon Art Academy for the 3DS to get some practice once in a while.
Is it good to just get you to draw stuff and maybe teach you a few things?
coloring book fad
Thoughts on these? I mean, i'm not completely opposed to them, it's that recently I noticed my local bookstore cleared out half the shelfspace of the already tiny art section- when there was already shelves dedicated to the shit in the front of the store already.
I guess it irks me because I draw already, you know? Why not actually give it a try instead of wasting your time on this shit?
FELT TIP PENS QEUSTION
PEN TIP LOOKS LIKE THIS
SHOULD I GET A NEW ONE?
I'm using a fine (F) tip Faber-Castell pen and the tip looks like this.
I was discussing stuff with people earlier and they mentioned that part of the reason my shits fucked is because my pen is garbage now.
I can't hold it like I want to (ie relaxed between forefinger and thumb) but I don't get any ink flow when I do and even when I do hold it in a way that generates ink flow, the pressure I have to exert combined with the awkward grip is enough that it fucks with my control.
Obviously I can't blame everything on it, but I seriously think that this is a big part of the problems I've been having over the last few weeks. I'm fairly certain I've completely chewed through this pen since I've been using it for at least a month on sketch paper. Specifically 50lb "fine tooth surface" strathmore sketch paper. Is that bad? like does that chew through these even faster?

Character Design Contest, SICP VN Projekt
Drawfriends, I am running a character design contest for cash money prizes. Visit /tech/ and find the thread on the SICP VN Projekt for details.
>>>/tech/365536
You can also email me for the contest rules: sicpvn@cock.li
Prizes are 10 or 25 dollars for a winning design, best artwork in the contest gets an additional 100 dollars. Looking for character designs to support a visual novel where you will do a class at MIT for Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs. The characters should be anime-style and be normal human beings, although anime style is very generous gives some room for different body shapes and sizes. Basically it is a visual novel about normal students and such, so Ben Bitdiddle shouldn't have elven ears or be a Lich aww yisss, Overlord-style. Anyway, I'm announcing this contest here to give you a chance to enter and win, email me with any questions and if you choose to enter, good luck!
Contest closes at the end of 2015.
making the switch to digital

art for the 23rd
Hello /art/, /operate/ BO here.
So i decided that it'd be a good idea if multiple boards had their own thread to actively discuss this, rather than just having all discussion take place in that one /operate/ thread.
If you have any questions about this, then please feel free to ask them here or in the /operate/ thread here: >>>/operate/38319
Below are the rules for this contest:
rules
1.This should ideally be an original piece.
2.The 8chan logo must be included somewhere in the piece.
3.It being 8chans 2nd birthday should also be mentioned. The "2nd" needs to be emphasized, i.e., "happy 2nd birthday" rather than just "happy birthday"
4.photoshop mashups (simply putting the logo & birthday mention on a random image) , post screencaps, and other non-drawn low effort works are unlikely to be chosen.
5.The final piece has to be posted in the /operate/ thread.
6.The deadline for the artwork is October 23rd.
optional: You may include any board of your choosing to be featured alongside your artwork.
Note: Since this will be featured on the homepage, the larger the image the better.
VFX/Motion design/compositing
Does anyone know anything about VFX or motion design or basically creating anything that moves but isn't directly "animating" as we know it?
I'm looking to learn more about it, but I'm a little lost. I don't know what to do or where to look for information.
I think I know the programs; After Effects is used for motion design, Cinema4D is used for 3D design, Nuke is used for compositing, flash/toonboom for 2D animation, and the various other 3D programs are used for other 3D/VFX stuff, but I can't afford them. The free alternatives I've found are Blender and Natron.
I guess what I'm more specifically looking for is some exercises or ideas for what to do, some guides/tutorials/resources to show how certain things are done, and maybe some resources for making stuff with (let's say for example an explosion animation).
Propping up your drawing board/surface at an angle
Do any of you use something to prop-up your drawing board when drawing on a horizontal surface? (like a table easel or self-made prop up aids?)
I hear it can help with stopping yourself from arching over your drawings too much (which'd probably help prevent back/neck problems) and wonder what your thoughts are on the matter
Also, how much of angle would you prop your board up?

Question
I have a bit of fear, anons.
I'm about to pick up drawing for the first time in ages. I've read the guides and I've saved a few tutorials for myself to help me get started. I've also read much of your advice.
However, one nagging doubt has always bothered me: whether practicing can truly lead to improvement or not. Every time I remember this advice, I am reminded of the countless numbers of DA people who have owned accounts for 15 years, yet have improved very little. They start off with their art looking like Sonichu, and their latest works end up looking the same as they did in the beginning. Are some individuals, no matter how hard they practice, destined to meet this fate?

Best Way to Learn to Art
Before you say anything, yes, I've read your stickies. I've torrented a few artbooks, I've looked up resources and tutorials.
I cannot draw currently, and to be honest I haven't started trying. I'm not sure if my approach will be flawed or not.
You see, the common advice I see given to get into art is "draw a lot". I can get that and I appreciate the simplicity, but I'm worried it's not that simple.
Let me describe my worst fear: I grind out hundreds of shitty drawings and all I get out of it is I learn how to efficiently draw a bad drawing.
What I keep thinking is, if I do it wrong 100 times, what's to say I'll get it right on the 101st?
Is it really as simple as pick a reference and just try to draw it as accurately as possible? Am I over thinking this?
People who learned how to draw later in life.
It seems like all good artists started drawing during their childhood or early teens. Can you post some example of people who started to learn how to draw in their mid-20s or later, and are at least somewhat good? People who draw cartoons and weeb shit are fine too I guess. Bonus points if they have a blog or something so you can study their progress.
I can't persuade myself to go on.
Even if I practice 8 hours per day, as if it were a fucking job, I will still not be as good as a high-functioning autistic child prodigy by the time I'm 30.Help with anxiety
Hello /art/, i know this question might have been answered a thousand times or probably more, and maybe my answer it's on the FAQ of this board, but I've been looking for help to deal with this strange force of mine that prevents me from picking up a pencil and learn the core fundamentals of drawing and i don't know how to deal with this, and the only advises I've been getting is to just simply do it.
The last instance where i was practicing drawing was 5 months ago but i had to quit due to having to study for exams and ever since then i haven't had the feel to draw anything.
The site i was using to practice drawing back then were the lessons from drawabox.com but even then i didn't thought i was going on the right direction.
I did, however, picked some books to learn drawing but i don't think they are for absolute beginners like me. I've been even reading the Power of Habit to start incorporating practicing drawing as a daily routine but i still haven't figured out how to find a cue that could make me want to start practicing more drawing.
I've been also considering just taking art courses but at the moment all of them are not available and even still i keep thinking they're not for me.
And apologies for the blog post and if I'm writing this on the wrong board, i just don't know where to find a solution to this.

help
How do you deal with the common 'everything I draw is shit' attitude, especially when you have to draw something by a deadline.
I took a class and I have 2 weeks to finish. Before that I was pretty confident with my work but suddenly I feel utter shit about it now.
It doesn't help that I'm a beginner too who doesn't have alot of experience.
But I really need to do this, I don't want to quit- the project's subject is pretty close to me and it's something I really have a passion for, that must be why I'm feeling so vulnerable. I won't go into detail about it because it's too long.
Is there anyway to combat this or fix this?

Hey, /art/. Some of you might be interested in >>>/musicprod/
How exactly does one do an art study?
Hey everyone! I'm totally new to 8 chan so please be gentle.
Anyway I'm trying to improve lately and the one thing any artist I follow says is the best way to improve is through studies.
Over time I believe I've come to do studies for things like gesture and figures in perspective (20p in Posemaniacs in 1pt perspective; at least 20 minutes in Quickposes getting the figure; do these two once a day, everyday). My question is how one performs an anatomy study?
I'm asking because while researching studies one video described that there is an inherent difference between studying something and copying it. Both yield results but there is a way to do things.
So i was wondering if you all had a process to study things like anatomy or if there is something I need to keep in mind while doing studies?
Wondering...
Has anyone had the same problem I have right now? A big mistake I've made throughout my self-teaching is only focusing on drawing. I never color, so when I do try my drawings always end up looking flat.
I've been drawing for years, but less than half that time have I actually attempted to color them. Just wondering if you guys have advice or have experienced the same thing I'm going through right now.

Advice for semi-realistic or stylized art that includes the nose would be most appreciated as I don't want to go full weeaboo.
Should I use Lazy Nezumi?
So I've been doodling for a few years now. It's something I enjoy doing and I enjoy drawing with pen and paper. My problem comes with transitioning from physical to digital. I already have difficulties drawing good lines but when I start drawing on a tablet my lines seem to get even worse. I really want start drawing digitally because how powerful digital tools are but whenever I try to draw I take 100 redoes before I draw a line I'm remotely satisfied with. I looked up some tutorials on ways to hold my stylus and they've helped (kinda) but in my search I came across a program called Lazy Nezumi. It helps make your lines smooth and lets you alter the shape of the lines. It all looks really neat and I can see it making my life a whole lot easier. The only problem is that it seems kinda like a short cut. I don't think I'll ever want to draw professionally but I want to improve. So does anyone here on /art/ use this program? Thoughts on it? If anyone cares I use Photoshop for drawing (even though from what I hear that isn't really a good idea.)
Apologies if this post was more fit for /loomis/.
I'm never gonna get better
I already know that it takes a lot of time to get better.
I feel like I'm never gonna get any better with drawing. When looking at my older drawings, it looks the same as how I draw today.
It feels like I'll never improve my art techniques. I have looked at tutorials and references many times but it hasn't helped me.
It's not the other hobbies that I have which distracts me from being better at art such as programming and music well?
Can somebody tell me how to get better?
I am also tired of nobody criticizing my art.
Why do you draw?
What makes you keep going, why do you keep practicing and improving? Why do you draw?Friend insists on using Microsoft Paint.
I have a question for you guys.
A friend of mine is a decent cartoon artist and draws a ton of stuff... but on *MS Paint*. Yeah, ew. I know. She thinks all art programs either cost a lot of money or are too confusing and refuses to ever use them. She only uses the straight line tool, bucket tool, and the curve tool to do her work. The main problem is the anti aliasing on MS Paint. It's non existent. Her art always comes out with terrible edges and it sucks. (Check the picture I added to this post as an example.) So is there any super basic art programs that are very cheap or free that I could tie her up and force her to use?
Dealing with feelings of inadequacy?
How do you deal with the fact you're not good enough? I always compare myself to others and seem like I am far behind them. I'm actually somewhat "successful" in a sense--my art is at a decent level and I am able to make a living off it. But I compare myself to what Jaime or Whit or DanielC were doing at my age, and I feel this crushing sense that I will never be good enough and that I'm too far behind where I should be. Never mind when I look at Sargent or Zorn or any other old master. My life is art, and my art is not good enough, so I am not good enough. I feel like I will never create images that will become iconic or last centuries and be admired by other artists. Do other people struggle with these thoughts? How do you cope?Getting this place to a decent number of posters

I'm doing some design work for a local used clothing store. Right now, I'm designing a postcard that has all the basic information of the store on it. The general idea is: draw a figure who is fashionable, and give it a summery feel. Could be pretty abstract, could be very detailed, as long as it looks cool. Also, I'd prefer if it has kind of a cozy feeling, like a used clothing store feel, instead of the aloof/imperious thing that a lot of fashion sketches have going on.
Post your submissions in the thread (watermarked is okay). I'll choose the best one and pay that person $30-60 through paypal (or potentially bitcoin), depending on my opinion of the quality of the work.
Cheers, and happy spring!
Lightsaber Redesign and Discussion Thread
So that new Lightsaber design's dreadful and I think we could legitimately do better.DeviantART problems
The logic of DeviantART is just wrong, they don't even care about skills. Also the admins of DeviantART doesn't allow people to say that their drawing is bad or else will result banned. And there is alot of pictures that are furry, FNaF, MLP, Minecraft, inflation fetish, pregnant fetish and feet fetish drawings. Why does it never stop?
Gesture Sketching Refining & 100 Thumbnails vs. 1 Portrait
at what point can you go from gesture sketching a million times a day, to refining them?
also how important is the size that you draw? i mainly do thumbnail gesture sketches, where each page has like 50 different figure poses, but no detail to the face or hands/feet, and the primitives are warped like crazy due to contouring. i'm worried that i'll be shit when someone goes "can you draw a face up close?" or anything for that matter. when should i try to transition and try to draw a big face, hand, etc on my canvas instead of dozens of small ambiguous figure poses and limbs? pic unrelated but i'll post a canvas when i'm done. sorry if this goes against the rules.
Breaking down objects into shapes
I've always been told that I should train my brain to see something and then be able to break it down into basic 3D shapes. Currently, however, I'm not sure I have this concept down, and I want to use the most efficient method as possible to practice this.
So I'm asking all the artists who feel like they understand this aspect of drawing: What sort of practice did you use to cement it in your mind, and about how long did it take until you felt you had it down?
/art/ bookclub
I think it would be pretty cool if we could breakdown books, discuss ideas presented in them, and bring light to the minor things that often go overlooked inside of them. There are gems, ideas...that become the most influential and powerful when you consider their reasoning and truth.
I'll start with Loomis- Successful Drawing(page 11), so for maybe 5 days we can discuss certain things written by Loomis.
I will upload a file for the portion I will be talking about.
What Loomis is saying here is really interesting. It reminds me of Craig Mullins' recent comment that it's not enough to be good at drawing and painting. You need to be able to offer something different enough from everyone else, such that people will hire you over someone else.
This section is also relevant to when we try to measure professional artists against each other. In my eyes, it's not the levels of knowledge that make a difference, it's what they decide to make. Sometimes we confuse choices for better knowledge or skill.
It seems also, that the internet has become the 'pool' for the knowledge of illustration and concept art. And truly, you see in great quantities people teaching and absorbing knowledge. Loomis would be proud, I'd say.
I see truth in Loomis's statement that it is difficult to teach without presenting his own work. Not only does it provide validity for their opinion, but more importantly it shows the student a demonstration of what he's talking about. I will often wait until I can show something before I post a critique. If I can't make something, if I can't even do what I'm discussing, I tend to drop my critique.
I think that's all I have to talk about this one! Think about it, and if you have any ideas, discuss them.
Personal art problems
Personal art problems thread
My problem: When I'm sketching aimlessly, I have no problem getting either realism or stylisted stuff out.
When I conciously set out to draw something, it inherrently turns into crap.
can only draw faces pointing to the right, and have to mirror for characters that look to the left.
can't foreshorten to save my life when it comes to humans. I have no problem foreshortening anything else, ranging from dinosaurs, to cars, spaceships and even landscapes.

>MFW Youre working diligently on a freelance job for some exposure and experience, only to have something blindside your life and the dickwad in charge of the project outsources to another less skilled freelancer and goes with it, leaving you out in the cold on the day you come in to turn in the finished product.
Seriously, this shit burns the fuck outta my biscuts. I don't know if anyone else on this board has experienced similar but FUCK ME do I want to punch babies over this.
Wondering if any more experienced anons in the biz might have some tips for a route to take beyond telling the faggot project manager to fuck himself? I know its not wise to burn bridges, but this guy and I have a history, so this sort of thing isn't out of the norm.
If not that, then any other similar crap freelance/commission experiences? I guess that makes this more of a freelance grievance bitchmoan thread in that sense
graphic novel advice
Hello /art/ I want to make a graphic novel. I have an idea for the book, it's kinda strange, it's about a kid who goes to outer space and dies. But I have 0 art skills. I need someone to do the art but I'm poor as fuck. I barely started a job but idk how much you need to pay artists. Also, this will be over the internet as well so how would I get my vision across implying I do find someone? How would I even explain how much panels and stuff? And where would I even find a good artist. Btw this will be an eBook, and I will self publish because no one will accept a book about a child passing away in outer space.
Anyways these are just some answers I have and I was wondering if you guys can help.
/v/: DeepFreeze-tan
Greetings from /v/, /art/.
/v/ is conceptualizing a new girl, and we'd like your help. There's already a few drawings in place, but we definitely need more.
Pic related is probably the most detailed and developed art we have of her so far, so hopefully this gives a good idea of what she already looks like. There were talks of adding:
>An ushanka, probably with the 8chan logo on it
>tongue piercing
>Ring with an icy-blue gem on it
Some people also wanted to see her in a bikini and licking Sea Salt Ice Cream. /v/ can't help itself when it comes to lewd.
Anyway, make of this what you will if you want, it would be much appreciated since /v/ doesn't have a whole lot of drawfags available at the time
becoming better/professional at drawing/art
I recently realized that even though I'm quite talented, my drawing sucks in comparison to how pros approach this so I started practicing on a regular basis. However all I do is random sketches and gestures. I collected some info on the internet on this subject but I feel like I'm missing out on the big picture. Is there a good bookseries or diy tutorial/schedule that is similar to what is taught at art schools?

So Ive been out of the drawing game for awhile and I finally got back into it. I bought myself an intuos pro to help with editing but aside from a class in highschool a few years back I'm not to familiar with using them. Could anyone recommend some decent tutorials for editing and that sort of thing? I would like to move towards webcomics eventually and anything you could recommend for that is greatly appreciated.Cintiqs

>Visual anthropology/ethnographic photographyAlbum art
I am a musician with no friends so I make all the music and art myself for now. It's liberating but depressing at the same time. I did art class in secondary school (or high school) as well as art therapy when I was a kid, but I'm more experienced with music. I find most contemporary musician's ambivalence to art pretty annoying. They get a graphic designer to stick a few symbols together that the record company might approve of and it looks boring. Before all this, album art was great in my opinion. The art for me is essential because it lets you hear the music without hearing the music if you know what I mean. Anyway, is my art any good or at least bad in an eye-catching charismatic way? Any advice is welcomed. By the way, I only use free drawing and editing software. I'll put up two more examples.WE NEED A NEW TERM FOR ART
