I hate modern art and I know I can't be the only one. I hate it so much I don't even call myself an artist because it now means that you're a pretentious asshole that squirts paint out of your ass.

You realize that this was made as a joke for basically what you are mad about right?

That is a pretty damn fantastic piece of art.

Anything can be art. I agree about the whole just squirt some paint on a canvas and look how deep I am. That shit has no merit. Where as this is something completely different. This is taking an object and claim it as art.

a ton of artist just made a joke out of the whole modern art scene it is something I do my self as an artist. Make jokes so all the rich dumb fucks can think they are deep while I laugh at how retarded they truly are as they try to discuss the deeper meanings of the piece of plywood I found in a dumpster and put on the wall of the gallery.

Look at the "funk" art movement all they were trying to do was cause controversy and make art as a joke. Look at Robert Arneson, David Gilhooly, William T Wiley.

also art is fucking subjective as fuck. There is no greatest work of art it just doesn't exist as it is different for everyone.

I hate modern art and I know can't be the only one. I hate it so much I don't even call myself an artist because it now means that you're a pretentious asshole that paints NUDE women in shockingly realistic detail, revealing the BREASTS.

William Bouguereau should be fucking lynched in the street. What the hell are the 1800's turning into?? THIS is our greatest artist? My god.

(guess what chump, you can enjoy classical works for what they are, and modern works for what they are, or you can be the dregs of humanity and boast of your righteous delusional prejudices).

hahahaha man this guy is mad.

My students couldn't tell between my apron and Pollock

Clearly they have not looked at pollocks work then.

As I just laughed when it was on screen instantly because I knew it was not his work. His grad students are fucking retards.

graffiti is bad because laws! what bad people. Look at what Lush has done in graffiti/gallery settings.

Oh pornography and violence is bad in art because it is nasty. Fuck off.

Art need standards because I have standards.

This is all bullshit. He touches on little to do with anythings.

Most artist do try to make statements using shock value. Again look at the Funk movement of the 60s. William T. Wiley, David Gilhooly, Robert Arneson. These people had extreme talent in their fields but chose to create work that has a message. One that is relative to today modern Ideas. Our world is shit made in the gutter why not make art that reflects that?

Yeah sure some is absurd and its mainly intellectuals trying to think they are deep but most of the time. Good modern art is good because it makes us think about our place in the world.

He can support the art he likes and teach that. I will continue to support the graffiti artist, the junk artist, and the absurd artists.

I largely agree with this guy. It's a fucking shame when people just want to stick their dicks in places and promote themselves endlessly instead of working hard to acquire skills and say something deeper.

Too many people want shortcuts.

Just my personal opinion, i think that art should have some kind of a balance in the quality and the deeper meaning of the piece. Yes, I'm saying that picking up an already made object and giving it a deeper meaning without creating the object yourself and demonstrating at least some amount of craftsmanship, really does seem cheap to me and does not gain a lot of my respect.

 No.1243

For what it's worth, I agree with you, OP. I remember reading in a book once, that art is about making a comment on reality, I think it's a good definition. A hyper-realistic painting is not art, because it's all skill and no meaning. Abstract is not art either, because there may or may not be a deeper meaning to it, but it's impossible to tell what the artist was trying to comment on (if he was even trying).

Caravaggio was criticised in his day for using average people as models to paint his saints. However not everyone who breaks with tradition is a genius, most are actually idiots.

So does classical art, only difference is that classical actually required skill and didn't try to be as loud and obnoxious as possible.

Have you been in a gallery recently?

Realize that the loud obnoxious people are not that common.

Realize that there still is a huge amount of skill that goes into creating modern works of art. Again look at Lush, Tim Foss, Brendan Tang, and Dave More

"I could do that it takes no skill" the funny thing is you didn't and dont have original ideas.

The first time something is done it is new and innovative like white on white. after it is done by 30 different artist sure it is shit but that first time has merit.

come on guys go to some galleries their is some amazing stuff being created. yeah some shit to but there always has been shit art. To say all modern art is shit is just being a pleb.

I was a designer, Illustrator etc for 6 years and tried as much to focus on traditional techniques. ( I got a large inheritance and just lost motivation, I'm so original heh)

For me personally the problem is the destruction of the craft. If anyone can be an artist just because they feel like it then it's going to be one shit hard and underpaid career with 0 long term stability, it's bad enough we live in the age of the internet and have to compete with people from around the world. The people with good social skills but no talent will have an even bigger advantage than they do in other careers.

It turns away the people with talent as they fell let down and it turns off the average guy on the street who expects standards.

Modern art now is just a power trip for the rich. It's a market that's incredibly easy for them to control and manipulate and they just use it to hold cash with art as treasure assets. The ego boost and legions of female art graduates that will sleep with them are a bonus as well.

I guess in the end its unavoidable and just a reflection on society. Not that it's all doom and gloom brilliant artists are still out there working but we have lost something and I think what we got in exchange is a bit shit and only really interesting for narcissists, which there are a not surprising large amount.

I guess I'm preaching to the choir here.

I'm the OP and the blacksmith that posted here. I realize I might have come on a bit strong.

I don't draw or paint very well and I have never called any of my scribblings art. I have produced shitty pieces of ironwork and things that I believe might be considered 'good'

But nothing I have ever made would I consider art, not even my best pieces. To me art is more than pure skill, a guy running a CNC machine could produce things I could never do, and it's more than emotion or a message, a philosopher is far wiser than I.

I believe art is a mesh of both technical skill and a message or concept you wish to convey.

Samuel yellin was once of the greatest blacksmiths of the 19th and 20th centuries, the only period that surpassed him was 1780's france. His work encapsulates so much beauty and sheer skill than anything I produce looks as if a child made it in comparison.

I guess since I'm a blacksmith I have a different idea of what art is.

I blame the 1960's "do whatever you want its cool attitude" believe it or not that affected the art scene all the way up to the 80s where Community college students could put on some black lipstick with a beret and call themselves "artists"

I don't mind that we've gone from the technical age, to the photo realism age to the "abstract" age. It really shows art evolves and changes through out history. But man. These faggots, I wish we had the old school art teachers who would slap a student with a ruler for getting a single line out of place.

I sort of combined two rants into one so I hope you can see my point.

life is about value systems, it is objectively correct to be offended by things that go counter to your value systems. canned shit goes against mine.

Here's a point, that urinal is around 100 years old, so why are similar pieces of art deemed anything other than derivative shitty copies.

Look at it like this, beauty for beauties sake is fine, ugliness is already everywhere, copying ugly art forever, as some kind of loop that follows the end of Western culture, is pointless.

Dipshits get hung up on semantics and use this "generalization" as a counter argument.

As if knowing to which period and movement some piece of shit belongs to, magically makes it not-shit.
