So that new Lightsaber design's dreadful and I think we could legitimately do better.
Here's my attempt, feedback welcome.
Interested to see what you guys come up with.
Rant for why I think mine works better:
>Not only does having the cross guard blades jutting out increase the likelihood of stabbing/cutting yourself with a weapon that requires no actual pressure to wound but you can actually cut through the hilt material anyway meaning that directing a blade to where those joints are, which is where you're meant to catch a blade, means you'd be actively directing your opponent's Lightsaber through your own and directly through your hand.
>Inb4 "If Luke had one he'd still have a hand hurr durr". No. Luke's hand was cut off /beneath/ the wrist. And it'd still go through the crossguard anyway for the reasons mentioned above.
>Useless addition to the weapon to try and make it cool. The positives added (possible strikes with the cross guard) are completely outweighed by the negative, especially when you consider that Lightsaber fighting, including the binds, is made specifically to knock your opponent's blade away so you can strike. When they bind, the reason they don't just slide their blade down and cut someone's hand off is because the opponent can do the same, the blades don't require strength to cut.

Yours is way fucking better.
I feel kind of upset that the + design managed to get through. Not only was some idiot designer hired for it, but it seems like nobody complained about it.
I can't think of anything wrong with your design, although I would lengthen the hilt a bit, it balances the design into a more of a broadsword look which I guess they were going for in the original.

I quite like that guard you've done, embellishes the shape nicely, see no issues with it.

>>1616Good job OP I thought the exact same thing just slide your lightsaber down his through the hilt and off goes his hand
I don't like how the little blades like cross though it would be cool if they just all met in the center and were technically apart of the same blade but continued outward diagonally

I'd just stick to one laser like the original design, it feels silly to make it look like a real sword because it's obviously a very different weapon. Of course you'd need a guard to keep your hand from slipping into the laser, but there's no point in mini lasers coming out from it. It's not like you could use it in combat, it's a long weapon so you probably won't be close to your opponent and if you are it'd still be better to attack them with the long laser. These designs are a jarring mix between old traditional swords and a futuristic weapon, it just looks bizarre and out of place and like something a child would design. Also weird because the point of the cross-guard is just to protect your hand and help you hold the sword, no one ever tried to turn it into extra weaponry. Also, with this it seems easy to accidentally swing the accessory lasers into yourself if the lightsaber is close to your body. Your redesign looks a bit less silly but I still think it'd make the most sense to just have the original single laser, but with a cross-guard.

The design works perfectly for it's intention: something simple to turn into toys and large scale manufacture. Something like
>>1622 might work if the movie was stand alone and had no outside obligations but, ultimately, it's Star Wars. The movie sells the toys, and the easier to manufacture the better.

>>1616Pretty much this. The current design feels like it belongs on a shitty fantasy. Sure, Star Wars definitely has fantasy elements (e.g. the Force), but it's designs have always been pure sci-fi. It just doesn't fit.

Even if someone tries to cut the cross guard isn't a beam inside of it shooting out so maybe the hilt material gets a little fucked up but the beam is still shooting out protecting you?

Yall niggas realize, that the outlets aren't supposed to serve as a guard, or anything for that matter, because the reason they are there is because the guy who made the sword is a noob and overcharged it and needed additional power outlets to keep it from exploding?
