This is a good way to practice value and texture. Take a screenshot from an animated movie that doesn't have a lot of shading or detail, then paint over it in Photoshop. Post results here.

it's fun, until you get to the point where it's supposed to start looking better than the original, and you realize you don't know what the hell you're doing.

The grass looks fine, but in my opinion it doesn't fit; it almost looks like you just used a texture brush and it comes off poorly.

What do you recommend I do instead? This is my first time doing anything like this.

Your grass looks like a tall planting of ornamental or uncut grass on flat ground, the original looks like a neatly trimmed mound. Instead of filling the area with a little wall of grass, paint a small hill covered in much shorter grass.

...Actually, upon closer inspection, it doesn't slope down to the hill, leading me to believe it IS tall grass, just very stylized. Maybe try making less prominent individual blades, and matching the colors better?

Dunno if this thread is completely abandoned or if there is still somebody here, but I'll post this anyway.
I managed to get some free time and work on this fella. I think He may look too bright, but I'm not so sure. Thoughts?

Thanks. I've still got a lot to do to finish this, let's hope this thread is still alive by then.
I hope you people keep posting your stuff here, this exercise was a pretty good idea.

Well, I worked a lot on it already, and I started hating it more than usual. So if it doesn't look finished, I'm sorry. I've got to practice with something different.
