From what I understand of Jonathan Speed's book. Art turned into this because art dealers could get a new high profile piece every week with "modern" art instead of having to wait months for a late 19th century style piece. Oh and people despised anything pre WW I&II because "muh system".

Richter is a highly respected artist, and of course these giant oil paintings that's been shown in the top galleries around the world will sell for a lot
