many thanks. quick question, where is everyone? i know /ic/ was already slow and didn't really got affected by /v/ or /pol/ but still. shouldnt this board be more active given how /a/ /v/ and /co/ are always looking for drawfags? in other words what other forums does /art/ go to?

 No.2465

>>2457

99% of drawfags can barely do a shitty doodle that wouldn't get ripped apart even in the beginner thread of /ic/. i think /ic/-academy just spits out maybe 1 or 2 pros per year, who then leave to pursue a career or whatever. the vast majority of posters are lazy wannabes who half ass everything and hate on everyone but stay addicted to /ic/ out of an unwarranted sense of elitism. they seem to think that knowing better, makes them better, without their art actually having to BE better and reflect the knowledge they claim to have.

it's a fucking shithole but there's always a small percentage of really quality people in there (the 1 or 2 pros that will make it this year, or pros that made it in later years but still ocassionaly pop up and chime in.

This, I don't post here save for certain bits of discussion because I don't want to spam my garbage.

Where/How do you get solid criticism? Preferably from people who do know their fundamentals and can draw worth a damn. You seem to have a solid grasp.

Getting feedback on public places seems to be rare and far between, only when someone knowledgeable passes/drops by by chance.

I used to go to /ic/ for that, and I got several gold nuggets of info an feedback that helped me a lot, but I couldn't stand the crowd over there, mainly because for every good critique I received, a horde of retards, no better than myself, shat on my work relentlessly.
pic related, some fuck turd actually gave this redline to me.(if you go, try to lurk a lot before showing your work and asking for critiques, I learnt more doing that compared to when I presented my own shit)

Anyway, every advice and critique leads to the same thing, so it doesn't matter if you don't get constant feedback. The only thing you need to do is strive for fundamental perfection a.k.a git gud at every fundamental.

So just read the books, take notes, observe artwork, grind your fundies, and don't stress over it, but don't be a lazy fuck either.

SOME of that redlining seems on the right track, pointing out some obvious stuff. It ain't perfect but it isn't a complete shit dump either

no but seriusly i hate how artist diss anime in general or even claim cartoons are better than anime like the chart suggests. even the shittiest anime style requires more study than adventure time.

> even the shittiest anime style requires more study than adventure time.

This must be one of those antagonizer posts that the author themselves does not actually believe.

Look, you can look up the credits for the show and find out exactly which artists worked on it. Then you can look up those artists. There's plenty of good talent on these shows.

Is it better to move on to the next step (drawing people) if drawing forms and perspective is 2nd hand to you?

I understand it forms and how to build them, but I have to really think about them when I'm drawing something. It gets my head full of fuck

 No.2728

>>2717

if form and perspective is 2nd hand to you, you can move to the next step by following vilppu's drawing manual. first part is gesture and form and starts getting into drawing the figure/anatomy a little bit later. But it will be good practice for you in finding an approach to drawing the figure that heavily relies on form-drawing, thus you'll be practicing your form drawing at the same time.

loomis's eye of the painter deals with some of it, hampton's design and invention does too.

Haven't read pic related, but I've heard this one is pretty good.

is it more important to be drawing actively in quantity than to be refining in quality when you are a beginner?

i currently do a lot of blind contour drawing and i don't really go for refinement. i just throw out fast thumbnails, dozens of them on a page per minute, and i just erase the page and do another, over and over. i'm not sure how to feel about it. if i try to stop and refine i just lose my flow and get caught up in the realization that i can't figure out where to put lines. is this something that passes over time, or should i change my approach.

I'm no pro and while people who can only draw stick figures go 'omg ur such a great artist,' I can't draw crap, but I think I can give two cents.

You have to practice a lot, but you have to know what to work on. Spitting out crap will get you nowhere. I don't know how much this board will lynch you for being on tumblr, but those artists are a good example. They get popular, and they end up drawing a lot, but drawing poorly. What ends up happening is a whole lot of deterioration in their art.

Pics related- Before and after this one got popular. I specifically looked through to find one of the few entirely colored pieces of art she did recently since she mostly just does lineart doodles, but I think you can see what I mean. Even if somethings have improved, you can see laziness. The perspective is odd, the coloring has gotten worse, and so on. In a lot of the rest of her art, I've noticed that she's begun to draw the same face for her characters, even between a 15-year-old girl and a 35-year-old man.

 No.4270

>>3690

I don't recommend erasing or throwing away your drawings. You need to look at what you've drawn and then decide what you want to change to make your next drawing better. This may even mean days or weeks later. Blind contour drawing is a good exercise and it's often difficult for beginners stop worrying and just draw so that's a plus for you. If you're wondering what to practice next go take a piece you like in the visual style(language? I can't think of the right word) you want your art to be in and list out what you need to learn in order to get there and then practice those things one by one. Try to attack each new difficult problem with the same energy you feel with your current drawing. In summary, draw a lot, draw methodically, and always be self critical.
