I've been studying oil painting technique for about 4 months now. I've made ~8 paintings on canvas, two of which are verging on "good."

Today I decided to try a pointilistic technique but it just looks messy and I can't figure out why.

What am I doing wrong here? My non-pointilist paintings look significantly better. I feel like I'm missing part of the technique here...

grind up your fundamentals.

You need to get comfortable with painting before you try out stuff like this! It took me 1.5 years to get confident with oil paint. That confidence made me not see oil paint as an obstacle but as an aid. So I suggest you build up a steady foundation in oil paint, and try things like these when you've gotten more comfortable.
