Hey /art/, newfag here.
I was wondering about the pros and cons of a cintiq and I can't quite trust the rest of the internet to be as brutally honest as here, so I thought I should just ask here.
Are cintiqs actually any good? Are they worth getting? I live in a country that sells stuff for a lot less than the original price and I found out that the cintiqs here cost like 800 or 700 bucks.

I've been using a bamboo tablet for years now and since last year a lenovo thinkpad I used for sketches (it would get too laggy for actual shit).

The only real question you have to ask yourself is if you want to look at your pen (stylus) while you're drawing. I (have to) use a cintiq at work, but I usually have the cintiq display turned off and look at my monitor because a) I don't get neck pains from looking down all day and b) my arm doesn't obstruct the view. The technical qualities aren't much different from an intuos.

The sketches I do on my thinkpad are better than the ones I draw with my tablet so I am guessing that seeing my pen is a lot better for me.
About the neck pains though, don't cintiqs have this thing behind them that holds them up so you're not looking down? Or does it not help much afterall?

It's one of those things you should only get if you have the extra money to blow on it.

It's a nice thing to have, but not worth it unless you're a richfag who doesn't need to question whether it's "worth it" or not.

I started with a cintiq on my art school, and I intend to get one of my own.
A normal tablet can get the job done pretty well, but I personally prefer a cintiq. Much more precise, in my opinion.

Pretty much. I went ahead and bought a 22" one. You won't see a difference in performance or anything from a Bamboo. (I used Bamboo for 5 years before I decided to treat myself)

I'd say it's mostly for the cool factor. If you can afford it, go for it, but it won't be "better".

In my opinion, (and I know this is heavily subjective), I'd say go for it only AFTER you have tried one out at a local retailer.

I come from a background of paper/pencil art, so obstructing my view isn't really an issue form me since I'm both used to it, and I often use my hand to obstruct parts of the paper in order to view parts as individual parts.

but I can also understand the advantages of not having your hand in the way, since most of my digital work untill a few months back was done on a Wacom Intuos.

Though, in the end it just comes back to what you think works more naturally for you. Either way, it'll only be a doorway to your own skills. It won't suddenly turn you into some grandmaster of the arts.

My experience is the exact opposite. One of best things I ever spent money on. Got it for 250 bucks though.

This speaks strongly to you benefiting from a pen display. I will second the opinion of testing one first if possible though.

One thing I will say about the 12WX is that display is pretty bad. The colours are really off, even after getting it profiled, and both contrast and brightness is poor. You pretty much need a second screen to proof what you're doing on. Otherwise I honestly can't find a fault with it. Really solid thing.

About the newer ones I can't tell. Haven't tried them.

Pros: Easier to draw and navigate, theres more than just the big size, they sell even notebook-sized cintiqs so you can have it on your lap when drawing if you prefer drawing that way.

Cons: Its fucking expensive. Cintiq screen costs as much as a new PC. If you can find a used one somewhere for relatively low price, then get it. Otherwise stick with your old Bamboo, since theres nothing bad in using one. You'll get your drawings done in approximately the same time you would do them with cintiq. Cintiq just has a slightly better feel to it.
