I have been struggling with figuring out how to make the background trees connect to the one in the front. Currently they just look like a damn mess.

yeah yeah cubist trash, modern art is garbage, and I should kill my self.

You need to elaborate. Connect how; realistically? harmoniously? Do you want depth/atmospheric perspective in the piece?

If you want there to be realistic depth, when you get to painting shadows on the trees, the constrast between light/shadow is stronger in the foreground than background.

The overall rhythm of the foreground tree is also wack. It should taper more, realistically.

The big tree in front looks to be a cooler more blue-ish green than the group of trees directly behind it.

Warm colors advance & cool colors recede, so try using the warmer green for the foreground tree and keep the more blue green ones in the back.
