Personal art problems thread

My problem: When I'm sketching aimlessly, I have no problem getting either realism or stylisted stuff out.

When I conciously set out to draw something, it inherrently turns into crap.

can only draw faces pointing to the right, and have to mirror for characters that look to the left.

can't foreshorten to save my life when it comes to humans. I have no problem foreshortening anything else, ranging from dinosaurs, to cars, spaceships and even landscapes.

It sounds like you are relying too much on muscle memory(and preconceptions) and do not know enough about the visual structure and proportions of your subject matter.

One way to fix this is to enter the beautiful world of studying the figure, and to continue raising your basic skills. I recommend Michael Hampton's Figuredrawing book, and Glen Vilppu's Drawing Manual and his DVDs for now.

I've been in a slump lately. Hoping to hop back into it soon.

Could well be that I'm relying too much on muscle-memory and the likes... does fit with the way I usually approach things. Thanks for pointing it out~
