Hey everyone! I'm totally new to 8 chan so please be gentle.

Anyway I'm trying to improve lately and the one thing any artist I follow says is the best way to improve is through studies.

Over time I believe I've come to do studies for things like gesture and figures in perspective (20p in Posemaniacs in 1pt perspective; at least 20 minutes in Quickposes getting the figure; do these two once a day, everyday). My question is how one performs an anatomy study?

I'm asking because while researching studies one video described that there is an inherent difference between studying something and copying it. Both yield results but there is a way to do things.

So i was wondering if you all had a process to study things like anatomy or if there is something I need to keep in mind while doing studies?

Random lurker here, welcome to 8chan, enjoy your stay, /art/ is a bit slow atm so it'll take a few hours or so before regular /art/ists respond

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for but my main advice would be to draw from imagination as well as just drawing from photos.

So try drawing some figures without references and see how it goes, then any parts you had trouble with e.g. legs go and look up some reference pictures and draw from them.

Final tip is that you don't need a name to post on here, and unless you want to look new I wouldn't use one.

So this is what I recommend. You need to kind of develop a goal as to what you want to get out of that particular session. You want to make your study/practice focused. Just try and check out where you are lacking and make a list. It's hard to see when you're starting out for sure. I recommend starting with things more related to mark making (clean efficient lines that do what you tell them to) and then move on to basic form and construction. Do some research into what each one entails and I recommend you start with the most base and build upon that. Just remember to be asking questions the whole time and really try to 'figure out' things.

I always get told that one thing I need to work on is clean lines, and that's from everyone. Would you recommend the "drawboxes" thing? Because some people have told me it gets smoother with time.

studies are an analysis of the figure (or whatever you are studying), meaning that you are not copying what you see, but interpreting it.

The more fundamental knowledge you have, the more "accurate" these interpretations will be.

Study the michael hampton book, it will help you a lot to "develop" your studies.

Also, check proko.
