I have a bit of fear, anons.

I'm about to pick up drawing for the first time in ages. I've read the guides and I've saved a few tutorials for myself to help me get started. I've also read much of your advice.

However, one nagging doubt has always bothered me: whether practicing can truly lead to improvement or not. Every time I remember this advice, I am reminded of the countless numbers of DA people who have owned accounts for 15 years, yet have improved very little. They start off with their art looking like Sonichu, and their latest works end up looking the same as they did in the beginning. Are some individuals, no matter how hard they practice, destined to meet this fate?

When you're trying to learn anything, you don't do it for the sake of doing it. It is your goal to learn something from practicing, and retain the new knowledge. The thing is, studying day and night won't mean anything if you don't bother remembering what you've learned. Don't think you won't improve if you try, you will so long as you make honest to god efforts.

I can guarantee you that people drawing sonic oc's the same way on DA for 15 years only end up where they are now because that's all they "ever" draw.

Thing is, you're not improving by not making any efforts anyhow. So why not give it a shot?

You find these people sitting on 15 year old accounts with little development in their ability because they never really try to develop further, they've found their comfort zone and have gotten stuck in the rut, you aren't doomed to the same fate, it is the future they've choosen (whether conciously or not) by staying with their sonichu drawing.

Practice alone is useless, akin to running around in circles, endlessly repeating whatever dim knowledge you already posses in hopes of acquiring more.

Practice + study is where the progress is made, the people in DA who never improve are just "practicing", never consuming new knowledge, just going over and over and over again the little they know.

Don't just save tutorials, grab the books, the videos, internalize their information religiously, and practice based on said information, don't ever sit down to scribble hoping for improvement to come magically to you in the form of epiphanies or revelations, look after it yourself.

In short: practice is meant to reinforce what you know, never to improve, studying is what gives you progress.

And no, unless you have a learning impediment or something, everyone can improve, again, the people you've seen in DA are majorly autistic and apart from not studying, they hardly ever draw.

Youre seeing people who's skill stagnate because theyre not looking to practice or study art in Deviantart. They're looking for their personal hugbox where nobody can say that their art is bad.

And when they lack self-criticism and dont get any outside criticism, their skills never improve. Video related.

Treat drawing like a craftsmanship where you want to become better and you're already leaps ahead of the sorry losers in Deviantart. Also, avoid Deviantart's community like the plague, the site is good for storing and embed-linking images but not much else.

conceptart.org was pretty influential in making me believe I could get as good as I wanted to. Daily drawing and study leads to progress for mostly everyone, over time.

There's a cycle of becoming as good as what you previously thought to be good. Then, after accomplishing that, you aim to be what you now think is good. I think most people are capable of this, you just need to see further than where you are currently and put in effort.
