Hey /art/, so I'm pretty good at drawing with a pencil and paper, but I can't get the hang of drawing with a tablet, especially with using layers. So is there any good way of transitioning to a tablet?

Time and patience

practice the lessons from ctrl+paint.

practice & study over and over on your own. experiment with settings in your software.

Dunno if it's any help but I recently discovered that using very small brush sizes is extremely important to me drawing well.

The funny thing is that I've used to do that years ago but eventually grew out of it. I haven't drawn nearly as much as back then because I always got the impression that my art sucked but didn't know why.

2 days ago I was using a 1px brush and realized that this was much easier for me. I've been on a drawing spree ever since and I'm really happy.

Anyway, what I hope you learn from this is to always try other techniques, even older ones, and not to get stuck in your own perceived comfort zone. Stepping out can result in great improvements.

The road of learning doesn't always go straight. Sometimes you walk backwards or hit a dead end. Just keep trying though and it'll work out.

I agree about the thin line thing. I would also experiment with the opacity controls of the brush, using the number keys. This will let you build up your lines slower, rather than putting down thick and heavy lines too quickly like a pigment pen would.

Make sure your tablet is set to map your drawing surface to the monitor 1:1 i.e. when you draw a circle on the tablet you get a circle on the monitor, not an ellipse.

Oh crap, I hadn't thought of that. How should I go about dealing with this?

My monitor is 4:3, but my tablet is 16:10. That's not gonna screw me over or anything, is it?

Just tick the "force proportions" box inside your tablet settings.
