Does anyone know anything about VFX or motion design or basically creating anything that moves but isn't directly "animating" as we know it?

I'm looking to learn more about it, but I'm a little lost. I don't know what to do or where to look for information.

I think I know the programs; After Effects is used for motion design, Cinema4D is used for 3D design, Nuke is used for compositing, flash/toonboom for 2D animation, and the various other 3D programs are used for other 3D/VFX stuff, but I can't afford them. The free alternatives I've found are Blender and Natron.

I guess what I'm more specifically looking for is some exercises or ideas for what to do, some guides/tutorials/resources to show how certain things are done, and maybe some resources for making stuff with (let's say for example an explosion animation).
