Hey /art/, what are the dots in the pic for? I see it a lot in western comics and sometimes in korean picture books but I've never understood what's it for.

 No.4629

Looks like a very bad/lazy attempt at halftoning, as if it was added on hindsight. It makes the character look very slightly darker.

I'm only speculating though.

I thought it was that but I've also seen it in colored comics, so I don't think it's just shadowing.

this is now a QTDNDTOT thread.

Can somebody tell me from what book is this from? also it would be appreciated if you could list any other worthwhile japanese how to draw books that you know of.

Could be just an artistic effect.

I think it may be ben-day dots when it comes to coloured toning. It may trim down on using so much ink when printing.

I think that's it, but the problem with OP's image is that they're spaced perfectly uniform across varying surfaces/colors and they're too small to begin with to give any illusion of shadows. If they were only where the shadows would be normally in cell shading it'd make more sense.

At least, that's my two cents on it so take it with a grain of salt.

Question:

Is important for an artist trying to learn every style? (realism, cartoon, anime style, etc) or should i just focus in one style and ignore the rest.

 No.4745

>>4744

You should focus on what you want to do.

I think learning something new can do nothing but help you, you might pick up aspects of stylization and attractiveness from other styles that can help you make better looking art. But the effort required to properly learn a completely different style probably isn't worth it if you're not interested of using it, it's better to master a few things than be a "jack of all trades but master of none".

That said, realism is always something you should learn, because that's what everything else is based on.
