Does anyone have good tutorials on how to pick colors for painting?

I can never wrap my head around this, the selected colors are close to black but they look so white , even the highlight is a medium gray

How can a dark color look light? I really dont get how to do this with coloring

Color Pallets.

Experiment with color pallets, build a library of the ones you like. Then when you are ready to paint, mix them out and make a value scale of each color.

I have issues with this too. I just use the base colors I want to use then fuck around with the layer hues or overlay some colors on top to make it look like it wasn't made with 24 colors crayon.

I'm lost painting in real life though, lol.

Now look at this pic. Ignore that it's a literal joke. Look at how well the colors go together. I don't know how the Japs can be so good at using soft colors, Italians with darks and shades, French with unconvential hues, etc.

For starters, don't paint on top of a fucking white background. It pisses me off when people start painting a dark scene on a white canvas.

It's not that complicated when you stop judging your colors by the color sliders, and start judging them by what you see on the canvas.

Pic related, it's the darkest red on Photoshop's default swatch list.

I had trouble with this too. The only solution I have for you is to train your eye to tell you what you see, not what you know

Read the book "Color and Light" by James Gurney and you'll have the basics down

Pretty sure it's because the 'light' colour is on the opposite end of the colour wheel from the ones it's next to.

Contrast and whatnot.

tbf I could be completely wrong, that explanation was the first thing that came to mind and it sounded somewhat logical to me.

I'm colourblind, I can pick colours if they have dramatically different saturation, brightness etc otherwise it is hopeless.

At the moment just focusing on basic line art, but was wondering long term if I should avoid colour or embrace it and just colour it how I see it and fuck what other people think?

I've seen colorblind people paint some really interesting things, because they use correct values but very unusual hues. Artistically it can actually look very good.

You can reduce the saturation to remove the colors anyway, so I don't think it matters much whether you paint in colors or monochrome.

Can this be a how you mix something to something thread? I kind of am having trouble trying to get a certain shade of brown using primary colors. Will post reference if anyone is interested.

If you're trying to mix a brown, generally you do so by mixing complementary colors together depending on what hue you want. When it comes to mixing, it ultimately depends on what you're looking for specifically, so it's best to do some studies with mixing.

But if you want a more in depth look at color theory, The Munsell Color System is a good place to start. You can find it online, and a good exercise for learning to mix colors better is to try and recreate it from scratch on your own.

I would also recommend, if you can find it, Josef Albers' "Interaction of Color" if you wish to see the above principles in action. It's also a good resource for knowing how colors are effected in the presence of other colors.
