Okay, so I decided to go to the place where I held my first blot on the Summer Solstice this year. I grabbed a beer, a piece of bread, a plaster and a swiss pocket knife. Also I head 2 coins from the German Empire at me, but I made no particular use of them. I was tired and listened to the music in the embedded video before I went on my way, so you can get a feeling for how I might have felt, in case you are interested. This is my experience:
At around 04:00 AM I started to walk towards the wood. The sky was incredibly clear this night. When I reached its edge I stopped for a while in front of the levee separating me from the creek and the wood on the other side. I was becoming increasingly unsure, because at this point the light from the street started to fade out. I decided to keep going.
I walked beneath the levee towards the bridge I had to cross. I did not feel ready to walk on the levee itself. Halfway there, I noticed something walking on this levee in the opposite direction as me. We both stopped and looked at each other. Judging from its size, it probably was a cat or a marten: Its eyes were on the same height as mine. We acknowledged each other and both went our way.
Eventually I reached the bridge. At this point I hesitated again. The way in front of me was again much darker that the place I was standing in. As soon as I reached the top of the levee in front of stairs leading to the bridge, I startled something in the water. I knew it was probably just a duck or something similar, but in my mind it might as well have been something else I didn't want to see and was running in the water. I turned around, went down the stairs and stood still for a moment.
I decided to go for it and went up the levee again. This time I took the steps down to the bridge and started crossing it. It became darker and darker as I walked towards the trees. At the end of the bridge I decided to use my phone as a flashlight because else I wasn't able to see the path at all. AT least that's how I justified it to myself. As I followed this path, I left a trail of startled birds and probably other animals in the bushes and tree around me, but turning around now wasn't an option. Eventually I reached my destination and had to realize that I wasn't able to see the moon properly from there. I had to keep walking.
Eventually I crossed another bridge and went towards a single tree with a bench close by. I knew this place during the day and knew there often is cattle around, but I wasn't able to see anything. I decided to start. I addressed Wotan, Balder, Donner and my ancestors. Everything was improvised. Halfway through my talk I seemed to have woken up whatever was sleeping on the field next to me. My legs began to shake as I heard it wandering around. It was probably a cow, but again, I was absolutely unable to see anything and my mind probably compensated it with the worst. I decided to continue.
I opened the beer, drank some of it and spilled the rest on a tree nearby. Then I broke the bread, ate some of it and put the rest to the tree. Then it was time for the blood. I decided to only cut one of my fingers a little and did so while looking at the fully red moon. Why? Because it felt right. I spilled only a few drops before I bandaged the small cut. I decided to head back.
I wish I would have been (mentally) able to walk without light, or at least with a real torch instead of my phone. It felt and feels like cheating. Unfortunately there was nothing noteworthy, or nothing noteworthy I can remember, with my dreams this night.
Does anyone of you have any advise what I could do better next time? I think something better to drink than a normal beer. Maybe I even did something incredibly wrong? No idea. In the end I am glad that I did it.
