We all know from the sources that tell us that the Germanic tribes (as well as other barbarian peoples in the north like Celts and Slavs) had elaborate and colorful shield patterns, in order to display their tribal allegiance, rank, or family, or perhaps all three in one.

Unfortunately the reality is that most of these shields are lost because they were made of wood for most of history, and by the time metal shields became common among the Germanic tribes they were becoming increasingly Christian (however do not dismiss that medieval coat of arms and old tribal shield patterns may have a connection)

However we do have a few sources to run off of and one of them I found was an old Roman book that contains pictures of shield patterns used by a Roman mercenary unit of Germans, composed of several different tribes. Each tribal unit has its own shield design that bear great resemblance to the patterns used by the other tribes.

These designs as well as the designs used latter by the Vikings are one of the remnants we have left of authentic Germanic artwork, and it is also something connected to spirituality (connected to the tribe).

Would it be advisable to track down what shield pattern was used by your ancestors (if possible) and used the pattern in a hex sign or tattoo?

>ignoring everything I said just because my post had a trigger word

barbarian is what we were known as and you should live up to that title, barbarian does not mean "savage", it means an outside to the latin world.

and it sounds cool

good read

and pic related, first is a gallic shield, rest are germanic

These designs are pretty badass. Interesting to see the yin/yang pattern here. Also noticed an angel clad in mail, a pair of snakes reminiscent of the dual-headed eagle. The two horns on a stick is either related to the egyptian horns of Isis, or the symbol of the chalice (holy grail). There's also an ouroboros, to no one's surprise. The wolf is disappointingly underrepresented but not absent.

Something to keep in mind: no runes in this heraldry.

>tattoo

No. Instead, you:

>track location of each design's origins

>become nobility

>incorporate ancestral design in new weapon

>no runes

I'm an idiot, these shields probably predate them.

I read about it a bit, apparently the yin yang symbol displayed on the shields predates any usage of it by the Asians

>tfw whites are more asian than asians

the two horns on a stick all come from military units known as "Cornuti" which means horned men, and its well attested they wore horned helmets in battle. It should be noted that many of them, especially the third one in this post

>>8244

bear great resemblance to the horns ending in animal heads worn by other Germanic tribes.

and I think runes would have been in use by now, but its unknown if runes played a big part in heraldric art. runic composition probably did however.
