I know in the 19th century there was a lot of pseudohistory bullshit that came with the Celtic Revival, including the origin of many of the modern Druid movements (most of which are bullshit and not based on anything historical, like worshipping at stonehenge)

I think it probably also has to do with the fact that Celtic culture is pretty heavily exploited in America as a gimmick for St. Patricks day.
