Since it is an ancient Pagan tradition, Asatru tends to focus on our Gods' connections to nature, which completely makes sense. But I can't imagine the Gods have fortified themselves in the forests, and that there is absolutely no connection between them and the facets of modern life.

So who is the God of Electricity? Nuclear Power? Computers and The Internet? Surely the ancient Gods have fields that overlap with these parts of modern day life. Or does anyone think that new Gods/Goddesses are needed for these? Or is there good reason the Gods stay away from these?

What do you think?

 No.9120

It stands to reason that there are aspects of modern life that fall into the already-defined domains of the gods. I don't want to speak for them, but I'm not sure that they would fully embrace the modern world. Creating new gods just for handling modern things seems unnecessary.

1. There is a psychic universe separate from the physical universe.

2. Living beings in the physical universe generate psychic (spiritual) energy which connects to the psychic universe.

3. This psychic energy can be focused and directed through methods such as prayer, honoring the gods and your ancestors, theological contemplation, and memes.

4. Every cognitive concept coalesces the collective psychic feelings about it as a spiritual entity called a wight. Pepe, for example, is a real psychic entity. You could even pray to him if you were so inclined. But he's not a god.

5. "Constellations" of wights aligned along a particular theme are what we know as the gods. Each wight can be thought of as like a neuron in the brain of a larger whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.

6. There is a wight of all the things OP lists, just as there are wights for trees, your flesh light, and dank memes.

7. These wights may either have coalesced into the divinity of a known God, or else coalesced into new Gods. Old Gods may have reshuffled their domains during their dormancy, etc. We can't know, except through their influence in us.

I would associate electricity with Loki's constellation, and technology with Hoenir.

For the internet, my association would be Janus - Roman god of doorways and keys; or Hermes, Greek god of transitions, messages, and trolling. Hermes is also a psychopomp like the Valkyries for transporting souls which to me feels very much like the psychic function of the internet.

In any case, the answers won't be revealed through any one person but through many, many people over a long period of time.
