I think what some on the left may have been concerned about is that if one durka durka blows himself up because someone drew muhammad, some folk might lump them all together and systematic discrimination and other forms of unfair collectivism could occur. Now, this is reasonable, as I would not attribute abortion clinic bombings on all christians nor a case of banking corruption on all jews.
The regressive left, however, takes this to it's logical extreme. You cannot criticize any Muslim or Islam lest you be branded an evil racist. Even if you don't hate all muslims, the second you suggest there may be a problem that needs to be addressed, even in a reasonable and moderate manner, you're labelled a bigot. And to top it off, they're massively hypocritical, often treating men or whites as one large, evil collective.
Not sure if there are any guys into vidya, but a dude named Yahtzee (a popular reviewer with polarizing opinions) went on about this. He talked about how he hated "gangsta" culture, and proceeded to mock those who thought it was based on racism rather than a disdain for all people who act like thugs regardless of race. And that staunch political correctness only serves to generate resentment between groups of people and make it so that important issues never get addressed. This also applies here. I don't hate a race of people or people who follow a certain belief (it's the belief itself I despise, but that's another post), but I do dislike those among them who do shit like rape and murder. I also think it's important that we address the issue that many among them are turning to extremism. Don't be unnecessarily dickish, but people who do this shit shouldn't be defended, and we should let the muslim community know that this shit is going on and you guys need to help us curb it (i.e. toning down the religious stuff and not flying into a rage over someone saying allah is gay). Tolerance is all well and good, but you can't just sit back and let people walk all over you for fear of offending someone, while also having the bonus effect of not letting minority communities progress and assimilate (like the Irish about a century ago) and creating barely contained ethnic tensions that will inevitably burst out into an all-out, /pol/-fantasy-tier race war.
I do find it darkly humorous. In their quest to protect minorities and create "tolerance", the regressive left prevents the flourishing of these communities while accelerating racial tensions to ridiculous levels.
