The religious say that Atheists have no moral compass and that atheists are amoral hedonist nihilists who are not be trusted.

What do you say?

The nice thing about atheism and rejecting ideology altogether is that it liberates one from morality. That said you can choose to be chained down to whatever morality you so choose. The only thing stopping me from committing crimes is either my disposition, threat of punishment or adverse reaction, or some combination. I do not hold a particular set of values or principles on conduct which is what is meant by morality. I choose not to constrain myself by such silliness.

I was hoping for something a little more uplifting than "I don't give a fuck", anon.

Watch this and read about game theory, Sun Tzu, Machiavelli, etc. I live by my own morals without gods. Most of my "morals" consist of my emotions plus the physical, financial, academic, etc strategies of getting ahead in life. But even living the most "selfish" life possible, you have to be good and do good to others if you want to succeed so I consider a lot of what we think of "morality" as bullshit that cops to people's emotions. Even without those emotions, by just using reason I seem to wind up making just as moral and compassionate choices as I would otherwise do.

I think whatever theists say that are people that are at least somewhat intellectually and emotionally stunted. People that fear testing the waters because they don't have the tools to successfully sail them and to make up for their insecurities, they lash out at others. They fear what they don't know and so they make laws and rules so you can't complicate their lives with visions of ankles, boobs, violence (if you remember the havok the christians of the 90s caused regarding video game violence, you know what I mean) or whatever the flavor of the week is that offends them.

>amoral hedonist nihilists

Having two of them at once would be hard enough, but to someone who thinks it's possible to have all three there's nothing to say.

Cooperative behavior is adaptive behavior.

An individual human is pretty much nothing,, humans only accomplish things as a group,, and society is based on reciprocity.

I reckon this behavior evolved first,,, and using a sky wizard to explain it came later.

Have you read any Epicurus?

One of his central tenets is that we should pursue pleasure and avoid pain…

This might should as a call for mindless hedonism but Epicurus is actually a big supporter of moderation.

After all excess leads to suffering, and we want to avoid suffering.

I've heard that christians answer exactly the same on moral question if the question not related to typical faith topics. But they change their mind if you rephrase it in a christian way.

I haven't killed anyone, raped anything-I haven't once gotten in trouble with the law.

And the same thing could be said for thousands of atheists out there. On the inverse, there's theists who have done these horrendous things with justification from their religion and if belief in God makes people more moral, then even with a majority of theists in the population, one shouldn't find that prisons are more populated by theists than atheists.

It seems that whether someone believes in a god or not is actually largely irrelevant to how people live their moral lives but I do find it troubling that I'm able to not kill people because I find the idea to be abhorrent and can form a light ethical argument against it and you don't kill people simply because you're worried about what God would think.

No, I haven't it read any of his works, I probably should. But the point I was making with the video is that even if everyone in society acted selfishly, society adjusts and we'd likely end up with the same moral system we have now, one where a little selfishness is expected and positive as well as the same for selflessness.

I think morality is built into the social system and it's not something we consciously have to adhere to or devise. We hang onto religion because we don't think we can morally fly until we actually try to cut our strings and realize the strings were just holding us back from discovering more about ourselves and the universe.

That's an interesting observation.. Islam has the most decadent vision of the afterlife ,, you are literally rewarded with booze and bimbos for abstaining from booze and bimbos…

Which sort of acknowledges how great booze and bimbos are?

Descriptions Christian heaven are few and far between but they certainly can tell you a lot about hell.
