This video on Nichiren was a good 30 minute review. I perceive the history and doctrines of it to have developed parallel to Christianity im almost every way, and it was this eastern religious sect that practically single-handedly destroyed my faith that Christianity could be the true religion.

It has prophecies, end times, the apocalypse, hell, sectarianist violence, a "new testament" by a Charismatic leader, a "protestant reformation", fundamentalism/reinterpretation, souls, prayer to one "god" (Buddha), salvation by faith alone, pseudo-monotheism, esoteric secrets (upaya), and persecution by the government which created a persecution complex myth.

Its the ultimate challenege for any Christian who believes their religion is unique, but researches it deeply enough. I'm particularly interested in rereading the spicy scriptures on mappo (which is their version of revelation/the apocalypse,) because it reminds me of mapo tofu.

It is sad that more Christians have not even heard of Nichiren. It contains strong arguments against the uniqueness of Christianity, and since it arose in 12th century Japan there is no chance any of it could be influenced by Christianity. It is the religious equivilent to anagolous evolution in biology.

I'm a Nichiren Buddhist and I truly love this religion. I tried to be a Christian for so long but I couldn't simply bear the idea of being thrown in hell for being a good person but don't believing in the Jesus.

Yes, faith is important but it's not a blind faith in an all powerful God as Christians do; reason is also essential for understanding the world around us and life itself.

I simply love it! And the meditation and recitation of the Lotus Sutra is badass and relaxing.

You have been corrupted and are no longer following the true dharma. Be slient! Cease misleading men from following the most important scriptures, which are clearly the Vinaya, or you shall be punished severely.

Its the ultimate sutra and a rich epic that is superior to anything in the Christian tradition. The ultimate reward for anyone who bothers studies Buddhism enough to learn the meaning of the dense vocabulary. It might even predict parallel worlds!

In chapter 1 Buddha sits down to meditate while about a bodhisattvas, monks, and gods wait anxiously for him to speak. As he meditates light shoots east from a strand of white hair and illuminates 1800 Buddha worlds and gives enlightenment to the beings of the worlds that were permanently illuminated! Then he explains his teachings for about 360 billion years while his audience listen in rapt attention without tiring or feeling hunger.

Holy shit what was this author smoking?

All of this and I'm assuming not a shred of evidence to back it up

About a million people in the audience. Imagine that crowd.

Well the preachers believed the end times had come because there were earthquakes, fires and typhoons. Even though these are common things in Japan!

I disagree with Buddhism because it's contrary to human nature and reality. We live in a material world and depend on it for sustenance. It's not possible to fully renounce the material world because we need materials things, such as food and shelter, in order to survive. Also, I don't think getting rid of all your material possessions and meditating all day will lead to wisdom. I understand that being introspective and trying to understand oneself can lead to wisdom. However, you don't have to do a bunch of weird rituals in order to do that.

Rituals can help though, and might even have biological causes. Like walking alone has made it easier for many creative people and philosophers like Nietzsche to be introspective. There is a university offering a course in the philosophy of walking, and in Kyoto there is the aptly named philosopher's walk. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosopher%27s_Walk

The lack of distractions helps, and a metronome or periodic gong during meditation could also help you to focus. Yoga is also a "stretching ritual" that is supposed to relieve stress.

Yeah, but why do you need to believe in Buddhism to do that? Also, I'm skeptical of claims that yoga can relieve stress.
