As a change of pace. lets discuss something that the religion or religious organizations have done that actually has value.

The first public schools that were open to all and free of charge were started by the Puritans in the Mass. Colony.

Sure, they did it because they wanted everyone to be able to read and the bible, and that probably didn't go well for the Puritan leaders because when people read things for themselves they form their own opinions..

But it still laid the foundation for the 13 colonies have the highest literacy rate in the world by the late 1700's.

And while I would rather fight to the death than live in the Puritan Commonwealth, I have to acknowledge their contribution to the greater good in this case.

saint benedict was a humorless hard ass.

But among his many many strict rules for monks in cloister he order that they spend part of their day reading and copying books.

The early Christians ran out of Christian texts and started copying preserving Greek and Roman philosophy, histories, and literature.

Probably not what Benedict really intended them to be doing,, but I am still thankful for those monks labors.

The salvation army did a lot of good philanthropy during the Great Depression. I also like the final evolution of Santa Clause/Father Christmas and his mythology, although St. nicholas is rather lame.

Btw does anyone here see a problem with parents deceiving children to believe in Santa Clause?

Not really. It's just a bit of fun for the kids. Let them believe in magic for a bit before they have to pay taxes and see loved ones die.

The same could be said about Jesus.

It would be easier to be a cultural Christian if the churches around here didn't insist on stripping all the culture from their churches in a desperate attempt to make insecure middle-aged people feel hip and young again.

The difference is that no one tries to impose their will on others based on Santa. No politicians are justifying laws saying the man up North is backing them or using their belief in Santa to justify shitty morality.

There's never a "Teach the controversy" about climate change because there's no way that Santa will let the poles melt but that can't be said about God.

Santa's just a silly belief kids have that parents install in them so they'll act slightly better at the end of the year. Belief in Jesus actually gets people to fuck with others.

Science could have obviously flourished in non-religious contexts (in fact it would do better in non-religious contexts), but highly inspired religious people also started modern science and they keep doing some important contributions today; because discovering the wonders of god's creation gives them a very powerful excuse to study the world… often just to find that religion was wrong just as any other random guess would be ;)

It shows how easy it is to make a young mind believe in bullshit. It's very good psychological evidence in favour of the indoctrination abuse hypothesis that all religions heavily depend upon. Imagine if religious nuts were only allowed to convince adults.

God is Santa Clause for adults. He's like Santa Clause except you aren't supposed to stop believing in his existence and miracles. This analogy also drives Christards mad, specially theologically-versed people.

Santa clause was legally PROVEN to exist in a US court of law in 1947.

Religion paid for some pretty nice art and proto-science during the Renaissance.

and nowadays bitter retarded christians think that's evidence their religion is true. It's funny to witness

>I don't think your religion is true

>LOL U FEDORA. WITHOUT MY RELIGION THERE'D BE NO ART

>WHY WOULD THERE BE SO MUCH RELIGIOUS ARTWORKS IF MY RELIGION ISN'T TRUE

> GAY PRIDE

Wasn't there also a movie about a nice mailman who used to open mail addressed to god (that would have been discarded), who then would try and answer their prayers? I remember him being arrested for opening God's mail at the emotional climax. Anyone deluded enough to send letters to God probably would believed God had literally answered them with advice by snail mail.

My problem with that argument is the level of power that the Catholic Church wielded at the time. It makes it so that any use of funds to spread Catholicism could be argued to have been a form of self- preservation, increase in influence and power (coming directly from how much people believe in their God) rather than these supposed selfless, pious acts.

Not necessarily true, but very likely.

You are correct but your example is wrong. leonardo da vinci did his anatomical studies with illegal dissections.

But the Church did sponsor some really great art. (Just don't ask where they got the money.)

Bernini did things with marble you will never see again.
