Yup, I consider anyone who pushes this religious tolerance nonsense an enemy of reason. Bullshit shouldn't be tolerated.

If you want to slap their idiocy around just ask them if tolerance is such a good thing intrinsically why they don't tolerate Nazism.

They do, atheism is a lack a belief in gods, not the belief that gods can never ever exist.

Atheism is just the natural position you are born with, you have no belief that god exists until you are aware of what god is and what proof exists.

It's totally safe to say that atheism by definition is nothing more than not believing in gods, it is not necessary to totally deny that a god could exist, but there is absolutely no reason to believe a god exists either.

And then there fucking assholes like agnostics come and say "no, we think god can exist but we don't personally believe it exists", well guess what you fucking agnostics, you just defined atheism.

Then there's religious people saying atheism is a religion, fucking hell, I just give up at this point. You can all call yourselves all you want, I'm tired of this shit. As for Tyson, I get the impression that he's not adopting the label because of some kind of negative connotation it has for him, regardless of the fact that he meets the criteria of lacking a belief in a god.

So it's sort of a social decision. I think the average person reacts much less negatively to "I'm an agnostic" to "I'm an atheist". They might see agnosticism being passive and atheism as an aggressive position which is actively calling their beliefs bullshit. I sometimes call myself an agnostic when asked to avoid giving the wrong impression of being aggressive to someone who doesn't know the definitions, but to myself I freely admit I'm an agnostic atheist.

Tyson wants to be a public educator, so he's afraid to use a label that is as negatively connotated as atheist.

The youth in most developed Northern and Western European countries is very irreligious. Being a non-believer is not considered rebelling, rad or cool. It is assumed to be the default position within my generation.

Maybe you were once a non-believer in your youth but atheism out of spite is not genuine and stable so you quickly relapsed back and now you are projecting this experience onto others that came to their conclusion by actually applying evidence-based thinking.

A fundamentalist is someone who refuses to change his opinion, even when faced with opposing evidence. Show me your evidence for the existence for of supernatural beings or quit slinging mud at people with the hollow hope that some of it will stick.

What you perceive as dickish behavior is actually the lack of false respect. People deserve respect sure. You see that all prominent Atheist authors are glad to engage in civil debates with their opposing side but ideas and ideologies whose camp religions are part of don't deserve it. Religons are not inherent qualities of humans like race or sex.
